View Full Version : Downtime for resellers

Well, I moved to Avity, after not being satisfied with another host. For the last 4 months or so, I have been happy, but about 24 hours ago...I get online and I am flooded with IMs, about my site not being up and clients being mad about this or that.

I have no information to tell my clients as to as what is going on, or what the eta is. Avity's site is down, I called the 1800 number serveral times. I tried to enjoy my thanksgiving, but my site is down as well as others, which make me worry.

I mean 36 hours of downtime...I dont like that...but what is worse, I have no idea what is going on. And I dont like to lie to my clients.

Just wish companies that have resellers would keep them filled in.

Here is a tip for you, ALWAYS ask the reseller host if they have an offsite back up forum and trouble desk to keep their resellers informed in case of data center outages.

Nothing is worse than being caught in the middle as a reseller with customers mad because they are down and you don't know anymore than they do.

It's amazing how many providers for resellers, don't have emergency notification proceedures inplace for these situations.

36 hours of downtime is terminal. :eek3:

Especially 36 hours of not being able to supply your customers with any information is extremely damaging to 'any' host.

Good luck.

Well if by morning, I will have to find a new host. I may choose phantasyworks if I am not back up.

More or less my credibility with friends are crushed, I will not lie to them, but in doing so I look like a fool.

TheComputerGuy,

By choosing an estabilished and reputable host such as SplashHost or HTTPME, I am sure this would alleviate many of your troubles. Pay a little extra for a quality service.

Whats so funny matt, I am already paying more than what they charge, so yeah egg on my face!

The reason I liked phantasyworks was because of the awards and uptime I have seen from the site.

Well anyways...I think I found a replacement host, now I just need one thing....the server to come up so I can get my things off the server.

If webdefinity.com is your website, it works for me.

yeah it was up at 12:30 today....

I am pretty sure I will go with someone very reputable, but I am going to need some help moving my files.

It looks like Tim has left hosting entirely, and passed our accounts.

Thanks guys!

I do think so.
I had a reseller account with PCPShosting since Jan/2002.
It worked well until May/03.
I stayed 2 more months, and left in July due to very very frequent downtime.
At the same time, PCPshoting seems to be merged with Avity, and they abandon the account/server in VO.
I don't trust them anymore, and won't take any risks to move to Avity.

The PCPshoting.com domain is expired and grabbed by another HK-based company.
I worry about the business model of some company: start-up, work-hard, growing and then sell-out.

Personally, I have very good experiences with VO, Hostmatters, FluidHosting.

I also notice that Httpme, Voxtreme, 123reseller work well for reseller.
Never choice too cheap account, or you will suffer from the downtime, poor support.

See everyone says that, but I was paying more for the account with Avity than anyone of those people have listed on their site.

Most reseller hosts have an emergency pager that can be used in such a case as yours.. Course, they would need to answer that as well..

It is true, we were used Voxtreme's service for a long time and got the friendly support, fast respone, 24/7

Good reseller companies always provide other contacts AOL, ICQ, MSN. But downtime of 36

Ello, new to this forum.

I am currently in the same boat, my server dieing *again*, there is a phone number, but it rings and rings, email never answered, and to top it off they close the forum *Hooray*

This is the 3rd hosting company in about 18months, guess I looking for another now. The joy of being in the middle as the reseller, when I know nothing, thats what I have to tell my customers, who up until now have been very patient, but not for much longer.

Oh well rant over.

Not all good reseller providers provide chat support. It all comes down to their emergency notification and rectification procedures. Many suppliers don't have such systems inplace.

You should insist on having the sys admin's home number, cell phone number, etc.

We give this to our resellers, and it doesn't get abused often.

Occasional downtime is sometimes unavoidable, and most clients understand that, but when they can't contact someone, they get frustrated.

Yep, it's always good to offer some form of IM but emergency forums/helpdesks in different datacentres keeps the communication open.

Cheers
