I was looking at COLO companies, and someone suggested http://www.theplanet.com I was wondering if anyone has ever been with them, and if there is any problems with their colocation services.

Thanks.

Do a search. They are a great company from what i've heard and read. Can't say anything based on personal experience, but I have not seen anything negative, which tells you something!

Almost every single thread on this forum came up. Had you possibly thought about not doing the search on "the", just on "planet".

hmmmm they sound cool, but check out how much they charge for excess bandwidth... quite a bit I would say :)

We've only had a server with them for a couple of weeks, so it's still the 'honeymood period'. But the reports I have heard about them, some of the customers, their network uptime and other stats are all good.

Apart from a small hicup with the setup, all is going well with our server.
I've only had 2 excuses to contact their support staff, but they have given the indication they are helpful and knowledgable.

AFIK additional bandwidth is $1.75 a GB - which seems resonable to me. ;)

I use them, they are an amazing company. My sales rep ( Julia ) is great, she's very helpfull. Their network is great, and their SLA's are very impressive.

They are not the cheapest, but they are top notch :)

Which of their facilities are you in? The infomart location or the former Inflow location?

AFAIK, it's a good company..... they host Hardforums.com which is a HUGE forum of HardOCP with almost always over 200 users connected... at least, all the time I check there... it's about that number... :)

Why is it that they have different providers to each datacenter? Are they not close enough together to split up the bandwidth or what?

One of the data centers is located at informart and was their original center. The informart is the Dallas center of technology, a multi-storied building of all types of technology companies. The other is located just a few miles down the road in a very large one-story building which was setup by inflow and taken over by The Planet only in the past year. Although the carriers may be slightly different, they are quality carriers to both centers.

The two locations are just over 4 miles apart, which in non-rush hour traffic can be 5 minutes or in rush hour traffic or before a Mavericks or Stars game can be 20 minutes.

I'm thinking about switching my 5 servers at RackShack over to ThePlanet. I was told by their rep YourHost "Datacenter #1 offers: Qwest, InterNap, Cogent #2 offers: UUNet, AT&T, Genuity". I host game servers on my boxes so I'm at a loss of which datacenter to choose. The first one has Internap, but then again it also has Cogent. The providers in number two all seem to be very solid though I have heard of latency problems with ATT and I dont know how latency over UUNet is.

What do you guys think?

I'm in DC 1, and it has been 100% uptime so far, but I've heard all new servers will be placed in their 2nd datacenter ( inflow ).

I think both are good, although I'm an Internap fan, so I'm happy I'm in their Infomart DC.

Yes, infomart was their first and I have also heard it is basically full so all new servers are going into the "inflow" location.

The planet host the hardocp site. www.hardocp.com 1st/2nd (debateable) biggest hardware review site in the world.

There on a couple of servers. If you do a search your probbaly find the images somewhere of when they were being moved over to the new servers.

They have really, really good prices on colo. imo.
It's 50cents a gig basicly.

100gigs + 1u - Tower = $50/month

Im in DC2, my sales rep has told me that they are working on bringing in a Gig-E between DC1 and DC2 so that people in DC2 can use InterNap and Cogent if they wish and people in DC1 can use qwest and uunet

According to their website that's supposedly already in place. Not true according to what i've read/been told but that's what they claim =).

We own and operate our own Datacenter in Dallas. Colo 4 dallas is a good competitor of ours.

Both are good companies.

Because, we can reduce monthly fees by almost $100 compared to their entry level server.

Doesn't the Planet use Colo 4 Dallas? I think almost everyone in Dallas is located there, they have a huge building.

I believe they have 2 data centers. The first in the InfoMart and the second is the old Inflow DC in Dallas which they took over earlier this year.

I recently installed my servers and had a networking problem (my fault). Their techs figured out and fixed the problem in about two minutes, while I was watching, at no charge.

Datacenter 2 is pretty empty, which is good because they have lots of room to grow. The company is profitable, which is one reason I decided to go with them.

I also found it very surprising that their tower co-lo price is less (effectively) than a 1RU machine. So I asked:
Do you have any specific requirements for hosting tower servers?
and the reply was:
No requirements for tower servers, accept that they are priced at a very good deal right now.
I asked several times and got the same answer. ;)
I guess they must have lots of floor-space at the new location, but lets not complain! :D
