Thank you, providespace 02-07-2010, 07:56 PM My understanding of cloud hosting: Paying only for the resources you need use. I may not totally correct, but how about doing a Google search? http://www.google.com/search?q=define:Cloud+Hosting or http://www.google.com/search?q=cloud+hosting (http://www.google.com/search?q=cloud+hosting&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) wfhouses 02-24-2010, 06:35 PM I use Rackspace for my cloud hosting. You can read their FAQs at http://www.rackspacecloud.com/cloud_hosting_faq I have been very pleased with them. ibee 02-25-2010, 04:02 AM Providing Hosting solutions using cloud technologies Cristi4n 02-25-2010, 05:14 AM ok, so what are those cloud solutions ? (what is the difference) Sphexa 02-25-2010, 05:03 PM "Imagine being able to provision a server in minutes or upgrade a server automatically. To bring servers up and down as needed. This is the idea behind Cloud Servers. Totally customizable, each Cloud Server gives you full root access to your Linux distribution of your choice. Your price depends on how large a server you buy. Based on Xen Virtualization technology, Cloud Servers brings the power of the cloud to the traditional server hosting based model. Just like a dedicated server, your Cloud Server provides total flexibility for you to run anything you want from a Java website to a Ruby on Rails application." taken from racespacecloud.com Cristi4n 02-26-2010, 03:20 AM yes, well they are describing Xen, I do not see why they call it cloud. Is Xen=Cloud at the moment ? jweeb 02-26-2010, 03:58 AM yes, well they are describing Xen, I do not see why they call it cloud. Is Xen=Cloud at the moment ? Xen is not cloud. Xen Virutalisation just enables cloud technologies to be used. The main difference of cloud over traditional hosting plans is that on cloud, the service is on demand. Generally, when you purchase a cloud hosting plan, the data transfer is not stated. You pay for the amount of data transfer used. This is very useful if you do not know how much data transfer you require. From my understanding, cloud uses "images". Like how virtualisation on local computer works. By using images, setting up a new environment is done quickly. Migration between physical servers are quick as well. Correct me if I am wrong. The downside of cloud is that it its still new, and may be seen as unstable and unknown for some. To others, it seems more expensive when compared to vps and dedicated plans. That's my 2cents worth. Cristi4n 02-26-2010, 04:06 AM Ok, back to my initial question, what do they mean by cloud ? Don't get me wrong, I just don't see anything except marketing a simple Xen VPS. Pay per what you transfer ? That's it ? As far as I know this method is used for some time now, before the word "cloud" appeared. images/templates whatever are used almost since the VPS servers were introduced, a VPS is installed quickly since it uses images/templates a.s.o. So, you add the word "cloud" to your offer and try to get more money from your customers for the same thing as a simple VPS ? HostColor 02-27-2010, 01:11 PM Some people would explain CLoud computing through virtualization. I disagree with them because I consider as a computer cloud a number of nodes (computers or servers) connected into a network. They enable consolidation, sharing and distribution of compute resources, load-balancing, etc. However what makes a network of computers to works together a cloud, is the automation platform which runs on top. sam9 03-10-2010, 04:04 PM Hi, The way I would define cloud hosting is: 1. On-demand servers. Create/remove/upgrade/downgrade servers instantly in real time. 2. Pay As You Go hosting. Pay only for what you use. So, if you use a server for one hour, pay for one hour only. 3. Create images, build from images, high availability, rebuild, re-image servers, etc., again in real time. :) Take care acchost 03-10-2010, 04:51 PM Hi, "Cloud hosting” is a web hosting service delivered from a group of connected servers. In general, a hosting service can be considered cloud hosting when it is delivered from a fully redundant, multi-server system, in which the resources are dynamically scalable and often virtualized. |
