View Full Version : Has anyone upgraded to vBulletin 4?
SwiftModders 02-04-2010, 11:09 AM Just curious if any hosts or anyone really has tried playing with vBulletin 4? I upgraded a few of my forums to it and I have to say...disappointed. I mean there are so many problems with the software on the frontend alone that it makes the upside of anything that added...pointless. There has been a lot of frustration in the lack of IE6 support and yes it is an old browser, but still prominent for most people and their audience. It's almost as if they have completely stopped supporting older browsers. They are working on the bugs for the 4.0.2 release, but I feel like it's a bit of a bad PR moment to tell users to "simply upgrade" and expect that to be the solution?
The backend is pretty much exactly the same, which I was hoping that might advance the look, maybe even move away from using frames (one can dream), but I suppose the old phrase "don't fix what isn't broke" can apply here. I still look at vBulletin as a top forum software solution, but vBulletin 4 to vBulletin as a whole is comparable to Windows Visa to Microsoft Windows in my eyes.
Does anyone has any experiences to share?
ThatScriptGuy 02-04-2010, 01:08 PM I've upgraded a few clients to VB4, and I'll be honest - I'm disappointed as well. We've had all sorts of problems, from outright PHP bugs, to small javascript and CSS annoyances.
The upgrades have all gone smoothly, with no lost data, but, to me, the upgrade isn't worth the hassle at the moment.
Also, the CMS is a joke. Every client that I've upgraded has opted to stay with vba cmps.
I guess it all comes down to what you need. If you don't need any of the features in VB4, I would stay on 3 until they get some of their issues worked out.
RyanDOT 02-04-2010, 01:26 PM I've tried vBulletin 4 and to be honest, it's very disappointing. Although many users are upgrading to IP Boards, I'm sticking with 3.8

How is IPB's mods though? Really a key selling point for me with vBulletin are the plugins and their easy of install. Is IPB doing better in that department?
shackrat 02-04-2010, 03:04 PM Your poll is missing an options for "Already upgraded" as the title of the thread implies. Anyhow, we just completed our upgrade last night to vB4 publishing suite. The publishing suite portion seems adequate although not nearly as full-featured as I would have hoped for.
I am however somewhat disappointed in the forum. The new style is pretty nice, but the changes are so minimal it was really not worth the cost. Our forum is fairly new and inactive so I don't suspect much of a learning curve. ;)
Rick-RikeMedia 02-15-2010, 04:53 PM I've had a play around with vB 4 and I used to do a fair bit of modification and skinning work on 3.x. So far vB4 is very disappointing.
The fact that InternetBrands has basically laid off the people who developed vB 4 in the UK doesnt exactly help. They now have a bunch of developers in the US not really knowing too much about the software.
At the end of the day InternetBrands has hundreds (?) of forums running vBulletin so as far as I see it, they want to make it as useful for THEIR forums as possible. Selling it on is a bonus.
It's vB 3.x for me. Wont be touching 4.0 until they sort themselves out.
The Dude 02-15-2010, 05:36 PM To be honest ANY SITES IM ON THAT GOTO VB4,I NO LONGER VISIT!!
Vb4 is garbage, looks horrible,is a disgrace to Vbulletin and any admin that puts thier site on that DOESNT CARE ABOUT ANYTHING AND DOESNT DESERVE SQUAT!
I am a PURIST,i know what GOOD IS,most of the worlds concept of what "GOOD" is has faded :(
Disrelation 02-15-2010, 11:31 PM It's kind of a tricky question for me as one of the private forums I currently run is running vBulletin 4.0 Software and although I do like a lot of the new features etc. I am really disappointed and it's extremely ugly, yuck!
Not sure if we will be using vBulletin 4.0 over here at Eleven2 but it's a possibility.
WHU-Mike 02-16-2010, 12:05 AM I mean there are so many problems with the software on the frontend alone that it makes the upside of anything that added...pointless.
You said it best. I upgraded my account to v4; yet, there is no point switching over due to all the bugs. Staying with v3 until they get the ball rolling.
HOD-Jardin 02-16-2010, 12:16 AM I was on another web hosting forum that uses V4 and it was actually pretty quick and I never noticed any bugs at all..

Same here, but then again on other forums I've noticed TONS of bugs and errors.
kris1351 02-16-2010, 12:59 PM I updated one of my social boards to the Suite thing they came out and the users are liking it a lot. The skinning took some getting used to and they was a little getting used to, but a month in everyone is happy with it. So I don't think I don't care about anything and don't give a squat. You are going to update to vb4 if you are going to stay with VB so why not get used to it?
emills01 02-17-2010, 12:20 PM I upgraded - very buggy and lots of problems. Actually from what I understand the 4.0 release wasn't too bad - I jumped in at 4.0.1. Lots of things not working that worked before. Fortunately there are support threads with workarounds until a new version is out but most people, including me, don't like to have to do the work of fixing issues like this when we've paid as much money as we have for the product.
If potential is worth anything I think it's a pretty decent package and once things are fixed and working properly it should be a pretty solid product.
inspiroHost 02-17-2010, 01:58 PM Nope, and I don't plan to anytime soon.
Disrelation 02-17-2010, 10:21 PM After a few weeks of 4.0, I'm kinda sick of it. I'm considering downgrading back to 3.8 but for now we're keeping it 4.0. There are a lot of things I like about 4.0, but a lot of things I dislike as well.
-Edward- 02-18-2010, 05:42 AM One of my sites now runs vB4, I'm now looking for ways to migrate away from it.
Even considering writing my own custom forum.
rotame 02-23-2010, 01:28 PM I've tried vBulletin 4 and I am very disappointed. I prefer 3.8 and blog :)
Joaquin_E 02-25-2010, 12:08 PM Hi everyone.
I installed vBulletin 4.0.0 , 4.0.1 & 4.0.2 >>> all of them suck!
Iīm experimenting problems with Internet Explorer (6,7,8) and Chrome. I havenīt tested other browser, but this software release suck. I just can not identify exactly wath is wrong with it, and if you use mozilla it seems flawless... but a lot of people is stucked with IExplorer.
Support service sucks too, and it seems that people in this forum know a lot more than the support team. I opened a bug report ticket, no response so far.
Also I made diferent instalations on diferent servers, and it gets weirder: some bugs go away and others came in. Also tested with PHP safe mode ON and OFF without fixing anything.
At my work we think in a public forum to increase traffic to another website, and everyone except for me voted for vBulletin. This is my first time using vBulletin 4x and I MUST SAY IT: the worst software I tried in years.
The CMS IS a JOKE, as others members said. The arquitecture of the CMS must be clean clean clean, in this one is dirty dirty dirty.
Without mention the ugly admin panel and all that.
For my personal projects Iīm using drupal, it is true that the learning curve is slow, but one you undestand it is a super software. It is also true that you donīt have all of the vBulletin Forum functions, but if you know how to use modules/plugins you can work with a real CMS (that it is also a CMF), flexible, easy and clean.
I think the CMS experiment of vBulletin is pulling in the wrong direction.
petteyg359 03-02-2010, 07:08 PM Quote from the vBulletin customer page:
Average response time
(last 30 support issues)
13 hr : 19 min
Back when Jelsoft was running things, this average was usually around 30 minutes, and never over 4 hours, let alone the current time of >12 hours.
The Dude 03-03-2010, 01:31 AM Nope, and I don't plan to anytime soon.Excellent.... Your concept of whats "GOOD" hasnt faded :)
ShaunH 03-04-2010, 01:53 AM I've been following this issue on couple admin forums. A lot of VB admins are either staying with 3.8 until it goes EOL. Or they are considering IPB. I'm actually considering buying a license.
they have a more comprehensive suit of products and they seem to have a tighter professional look. I recommend who is frustrated with VB check out IPB. They may be what you want.
