Hi All:

I am currently a reseller and am hoping to move on to dedicated once I get enough clients. I contacted Alabanza and they sent me a price list, which seems a little steep. Does anyone know of VDI's prices? Are there other companies besides these two which offer managed dedicated servers with hosting automation software? Thanks for the input!

In all honesty I would not be able to recommend VDI as a data center at the moment.

Our servers have had about 90% uptime over the past two days and we are now losing customers more quickly than we can recruit them.

Even when the server have been up they have been too slow.

Basically I am sitting here watching my business leak away.

Its possible that things might improve but I am fairly dissolusioned right now.

Gordon:
I thought that adding their new equipment a couple of weeks ago would have fixed their problems. Is that not the case?

Still working on it (or at least I think thats what the problems are today).

See http://www.vdi.net/forums for the announcements.

Basically it keps going on and off:

(this image is on a server at Alabanza)
Its a VDI problem not related to who the servers are sourced with because I have four with different companies.

Yes, and if the truth be told, half the hosts who frequent these boards have similar ones right now.....

Which reminds me of "VDI Friday" - the day of the big outage when a number of the customers I lost signed up with other VDI based hosts and I recruited a customer abandoning his current host for the same reason.

Ho hum.

Actually
Its getting better.

Its been too long a day......

I had one server with that annoying fault where the server name on directory listings appears as the name of the first namevirtualhost inthe httpd.conf.
So I went in to put a fake entry as the first one with the correct server name.

Anyway, the server has been that unresponsive on echo that I was hitting the delete key and nothing was happening.
Next thing, half my httpd.conf diappeared like someone unravelling knitting.
No harm done because I just exited without saving, but these short outages are worse than proper down time.

Hopefully it will all be worth it for the half dozen customers I will have left.......

I wish them well, and I know the benefits it will bring ....... but it is doing great harm to my business and when I look at those three little faces looking up at me saying "daddy, why can't we have new clothes" and I have to say "well its because someone was doing server maintenance at VDI...."
(cue: violins) but really it is almost that bad.
If it was not for my consultancy work this would be a no salary month.

I have updated that screenshot - it *is* getting better.

VDI, I think it is getting a bit better. In the evenings some times its really really slow. However I havnt noticed much downtime at all. Usually a couple minutes here or there, and a few minutes early morning. I think the past 24 hours were 100% up though.

Just when I thought we were back to normal, its all gone again:

The only thing which is keeping my business alive is the fact I can still recruit new customers (my sales site is still at Alabanza so is up when VDI is down)

I have been very fortunate...my clients have been extremely patient. I keep them informed the best that I can, and I explained to them that before I move, I want to thorough check things out.

It also helps that I have (and my clients) have seen an improvement.

Hopefully, in another week or so this nightmare will be over.

Hell, i never thought this was still so bad.
In terms of loss of connectivity etc, i thought it had all been sorted with recent upgrades.
Best of luck anyway chaps

I would recomend http://www.pwebtech.com

their prices are pretty good (may be negotiable if you sweet talk jay enough ;) ) and they offer CP3 for only $100mth extra.

I have a site with him and my site monitor always shows great response times.

i was thinking of ditching alabanza for vdi, good thing i dropped by here.

if you were to choose between alabanza and vdi (like they're the only two providers out there), what would you choose?

Its funny....last few days, trying to access our sites, its dragged, timed out, etc. About 1am last night, everything started going a lightspeed again. I mean, I check 12 POP accts and they would time out at least 1x, and last night if ya blinked ya missed it. Same with FTPing into an acct. Whooosh. <G> Now, its back to "normal". Who gave the VDI hamsters the jolt cola last night, and can they get em another case is what I wanna know. :)

On the plus side, it appears to be improving if my info from qwkmon.com is accurate. :)

that's the pattern...during the day it's dog slow, during the night it's amazingly fast.

So all we have to do is convince the world to run 12 hours ahead or behind and we'll do fine. :)

Im sure everyone hopes that is the case but the track record may indicate otherwise. Theyve been helpful at times but the big IP problem this Feb and downtiem in Mar has costs us too much already. We need more security than that and we've got it now.

i think they must have fixed something because the past few days i have been getting a lot of packet loss, now theres not packet loss, just really slow ping times...i cant wait till the 24th

How come I can't seem to run a traceroute from anywhere to VDI through UUNet? All places I traceroute from seem to be going through Level3.net (which seems to be slower), when they usually go through UUNet. Even a server colocated at UUNet goes through Level3.

What's up with that?

I don't get any packet loss through Level3 though, which I did get through UUNet.

Hi skysenshi,
I did leave alabanza for vdi. Other than this slowness I am much better off.
They posted in their forum last night that the upgrade will be Wed. Midnight.
30 minutes downtime to change out the router and software , and a card I think... then all will be faster than ever.
:D

You would do well moving over after this fix is done. Right now I think they have stopped taking customers until this is fixed anyway.
I feel that was a positive more on their part.

The owner said their will be a major announcement Wednsday too... a big possitive thing... no clues given. So, let's see what is up then.

I honestly havn't seen to much of a problem with VDI this week. I think it was wensday evening around five it was really really slow, other then that its been a little slow here and there, but I have never had complete downtime. I have email accounts on both a alabanza server and a vdi server and the alabanza accounts timeout more then the vdi ones have been.

I am on a EDU line so I might not be the best judge, however Im regularly over a friends who has a @home line and everything is fine from that too usually.

Their forum is laden with complaints. Hopefully everything gets fixed. Alabanza can really drill a hole on your pocket.

I too, have not had much in the way of problems from my connects this past week. In fact things have been going quite smoothly, I am afraid, except for the occasional -- and I mean very occasional -- slowdown. I've never been completely unable to get through.

My sites are always, always faster than yahoo, msnbc, et al.

Additionally, I have not received any connect complaints from either my retail customers (who can be a very outspoken and testy bunch, which I love them for and adore their candor!!!), nor from my hosting clients. Of course, my hosting clients have fairly reasonable uptime expectations and have been around the block for 4-5 years, so they are more patient and confident about "overall reliability" than I suppose some other clients might be.

Now to get those network upgrade e-mails out. I am counting the minutes... oh Bill... I do so hope it all goes well!!!!

*sings* where, oh where could it be...?

Midnight on April 24th has come and gone... it was 2.5 hours ago... I've been online and not seen a lick of downtime. This means:

(a) Bill is lightning fast, or more likely
(b) The promised upgrade didn't happen...

I wonder if Bill meant midnight on the 25th , not the 24th... in which case it's tomorrow night... in which case I now look like a dork for having sounded the alarms for the wrong day when in fact I had the right one all along??????

*ponders*
