View Full Version : myvirtualnet.net serious network slowdown, anyone?
universal2001 11-27-2002, 11:47 PM I am currently receiving extremely slow network speeds with myvirtualnet.net. I'm not sure if its just my server so I am posting this to see if anyone else is experiencing the same problem..
This is what I get from FTP.uu.net download test from my dedicated server...
ftp> get uumap.tar.Z
local: uumap.tar.Z remote: uumap.tar.Z
227 Entering Passive Mode (192,48,96,9,146,4)
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for uumap.tar.Z (8520221 bytes).
226 Transfer complete.
8520221 bytes received in 355 secs (23 Kbytes/sec)
As you can see the download speed is 23Kb's per second.. :(
This has been occuring for the past 24 hours with no resolution.
lftp FTP.uu.net
lftp FTP.uu.net:~> get uumap.tar.Z
8520221 bytes transferred in 13 seconds (628.4K/s)
lftp FTP.uu.net:/>
that's from my server in globalcompass, where is yours?
clocker1996 11-28-2002, 12:42 AM not that fast, but :

neonlexx 11-28-2002, 01:38 AM myvirtualnet.net @ global compass lately has been slow i think mostly due to DoS attacks...lately i think the whole network has degraded from what it used to be.
clocker1996 11-28-2002, 08:04 AM i was having a lot of problems with myvirtualnet
packet loss
server rebooting once a day for no reason
congestion
blah blah
things are gettin better now, but i was this close to cancelling.

Anyone talked to Robin lately? I have had a ticket open for about 3 days with no responce, and haven't seen him online either.
universal2001 11-29-2002, 01:22 AM Same!! My server has been constantly going up and down for the last 2 days! (thats over 48 hours) and noone is able to help :(
clocker1996 11-29-2002, 07:40 AM yeah their support isnt very quick, which is what frustrates me the most.
that's why i haven't bought anymore servers there.
neonlexx 11-29-2002, 01:55 PM Yes I am having a billing issue with my CC, They have been successfully billing for a few months and then all of a sudden my card is invalid (card doesnt expire til 2004). I dont get it. I was refered to kim in their billing dept, but she has yet to get back to me on the status of things.....
No ideas whats going on =/
universal2001 11-29-2002, 10:12 PM :( i went with robin due to all the good remarks this company had but so far im afraid things might not get better :(
diederik 11-30-2002, 04:39 AM Yep, I had the same experiences with his company ( support could be very slow, even when a server was down it took him 8+ hours to respond one time ).
He's a friendly guy, but I think he should add another person to his company to increase the support.

Kim has responded to every email she has received. I will follow up and see if maybe an email got misdirected.
As far as your card being rejected, all our processor can tell us if the card was declined or if the number was invalid. They can't give us much more details than that. I know you've said you've used that card since it was declined by us but we process hundreds of transactions a month successfully. Our system is working properly. I will continue to search to see what could be causing your card to be rejected and to see if it's because of expiration # or change of address.

I'm getting caught up on tickets now. As people have noticed support has been getting slow lately as we just continue to grow and add on more customers than we ever expected every month. We have customers for virtual hosting, dedicated servers, and Cpanel support customers.
I got away for part of a week for Thanksgiving to try and take a small break. I've kept up with emergencies and reboots. I apologize to you and everyone else for the delays.
Network troubles lately have caught me off guard as well in addition to increased business. I haven't been able to address most of the issues because I have not been made aware of all of them. DOS has been the source of a lot of the issues... and could be all of them.
I'm addressing these issues with the sales manager and have expressed my concerns and unhappiness with the problems. Some of the DOS have originated from my machines or colo machines through me. Unless someone has moved in since last week larger, from what I'm told I'm the second largest presence inside Global as far as rackspace and amount of bandwidth used. So I have a higher percentage of problems as other larger companies do with having machines from time to time having issues. But other problems are going on that I'm not getting fully informed of and I am very sorry to my customers for this.
I will contact everyone when I can get resolutions and answers to these questions.
I appreciate everyone's patience and understanding.

We have added an additional person a month ago. I'm not sure which time it took 8 hours to respond to a downed server but I assure you that's not the norm and as you commented it was once. No matter how hard we try sometimes things go wrong with procedures but we do sincerely try to correct and improve things when that does happen.
diederik 12-01-2002, 10:31 AM Robin,
Yep it was one time - I know it's not the norm, I know that. Glad to see you've added support staff now :)
universal2001 12-01-2002, 05:41 PM Good to hear that things will be better now rastoma! The network is now back to perfect condition :)
webdesign 12-02-2002, 09:49 PM I have been a customer of Robin's for less than a month now and I have to say that he was excellent about getting me up and running after a disaster with my last reseller account. I'll give him all the Kudos in the world for being and upstanding guy with a great head for the biz!
However I have been finding excessive amounts of downtime with no responses to emails over the last week or so. There were outages of service for 2 and 4 hours yesterday and some downtime ever day for the last 2 weeks on the server that I am on. I am down right now as a matter of fact! As a reseller trying to grow my client base, I cannot do so with these kinds of issues.
I understand better than anyone that downtime happens - but what can be done when it is excessive? I lost two large clients who wanted to host with me. When they went to my site yesterday and saw that I was offline for 4 hours they went elsewhere. It cost me over $200.00 a month in revenue for each account. I had wored for two weeks to secure these clients as well. This is business that would have enabled me to lease a server.
Robin, you're a teriffic guy - but when is this going to end?
Can anyone access myvirtualnet.net right now? It seems like their nameservers are down.
Our dedicated box has been off the air there since 8:15pm Eastern or so.:bawling:
thesmallguyshost 12-03-2002, 03:56 AM We are having a horrible time with named on the server which of course what lets the nameservers resolve domains. I have reinstalled, fixed, hacked, patched everything that can be done and named just dies out of no where. I have contacted Darkorb numerous times and they can't see anything that would cause it.
I'm in the process of setting up a new server and am going to be migrating the accounts over to it to finally get rid of this continuing issue.
It will very soon be back to normal.
Thanks for hanging in there everyone.
thesmallguyshost 12-03-2002, 03:59 AM rla,
can you please contact me at my email address and let me know who you are and what machine you have? i just got back in from the data center and have been there most of the day. there have been no issues what so ever with the network today. if you're server is down it then it's a locked machine or some other physical issue.
<edit> is this Rob ? if so, it looks like Kim took care of the reboot... I didn't see it at first... sorry for the confusion. if this isn't Rob, then we still have a problem :)
also we have mentioned to all customers to send an email to a special emergency email address for reboots as a standard support ticket is not the fastest way to contact us. i have PM'd you in case you have forgotten that email address or if our original email somehow got lost on it's way to you.
the issues the last couple of posters are referring to is one of my virtual hosting machines and it itself having problems... not the network.
clockwork 12-03-2002, 04:02 AM Why not just do a fresh install of named?
Surely there's gotta be some errors in your logs somewhere...

i have done a fresh install... completely removed and installed.
no errors that point to why it dies. support from darkorb doesn't see any errors that point to why it dies.
Yes, this is Rob. Got the PM and a reboot seems to have cured the problem. Odd that it would happen at the same time you were having trouble with DNS. Maybe some kind of DOS attack knocked both out? After reviewing the logs, it appears our downtime was not as long as I thought - it looks like there a brief network connectivity problem around 8pm that trigger a machine down page to me. I couldn't get to a computer until 10. The last message I have in any log files from around 9:30. I requested the reboot at 11:30.
I didn't know the other posters were talking about virtual machines (isn't this a dedicated forum?). I do know when I went to enter a support ticket, I couldn't - so I incorrectly assumed the outage was wider than just me. This may have been when you were having DNS problems.
In any case, as usual, Robin is on top of things and making it right. Thanks for the great service!
webdesign 12-04-2002, 11:56 PM My mistake, I didn't notice that it was for the dedicated servers till just now when I came back to check on the post. I searched for info the other night to see if there were any posts relating to the outage prob's and didn't realize this forum was for ded's.
thesmallguyshost 12-05-2002, 11:04 AM as far as the other network issues we've experienced lately most have been DOS related. we have not allowed IRC servers at all for sometime now (and Global no longer allows any customers to run one either), but there have been a few people trying to get away with it.
the DC is implementing a check (script) that will probe every machine periodically to make sure no IRC servers are running to catch potential problems before they start.
they are also adding another GIG connection and replacing their front end routers with some higher end Cisco equipment. they are actively and agressively updating everything. Global like us has experienced tremendous growth over the last two months, faster than we expected.
with these changes and upgrades we're going to bring back the level of service and quality of network everyone is used to seeing.

Add record keeping to the list of things you need to work on. I received an Email from you today asking me to cancel an account that is spamming people.
I haven't been your customer for well over a month. I did have a server with you for a few days, but cancelled it almost immediately when I didn't get any response from you about a few setup issues that were outstanding.
clocker1996 12-11-2002, 05:23 PM well I for one will be cancelling because their network seems very unstable
like right now im getting packet loss to my server
this has happend several times last month and this month.
i can even feel it when I type in the ssh window... i press a and it shows up 2 secs later
and i know it isnt just my server, because im doing tests on other ips on the same subnet as mine, and they are experiencing the same problem.
52% packet loss.
34% packet loss.
its bs
im not even going to bother opening a ticket, or trying to get a hold of their support, because this isnt the first time its happend.
universal2001 12-11-2002, 05:40 PM same thing here. the network is VERY VERY VERY SLOW atm. I don't know why this has been happening lately so much.
I just did a FTP test download from ftp.uu.net and I the results are:
8520221 bytes (8.5mb) received in 92.6 secs (90 Kbytes/sec)
WOW, talk about really slow :(

that was just a mistake because of my outlook express automatically filling in an address to the person i was sending the spam complaint to and your address was similar.

no one has ever tripped over your server, network cable or anything. your machine had powered down a couple of times because of a power capacity issue on the rack you were originally on. After that I moved your machine to another to cabinet and has not been touched since (at least 30 days). If it's been restarted since that move it wasn't by us.
thesmallguyshost 12-12-2002, 10:50 AM Well, lovely timing this morning all....
We had some kind of power issue this morning that caused some of my racks to go down, and the racks that didn't go down the network went down because of the power to the swtich feeding those unaffected racks was down for a bit.
I don't have the details yet but this was not just myvirtualnet.net... several other customers in Global Compass went down from what I was told. We're back up for now... I think it was about 30 mins approx.

just to elaborate more on this for a second..
i received pms today of people who have used myvirtualnet before, and they told me they too, have felt these sudden "reboots" that were not requested.
so atleast i konw im not alone. it has happend, i cant even keep a 20 day uptime on taht server, because it somehow gets rebooted.
