I just checked my online bank this morning and to my surprise...

I had a direct debit (unauthorized) setup with a company I have never used, they took £600 GBP from my personal account and the best thing of it...

Wait for it...

The direct debit is not even in my name...

WOW Halifax it is amazing that you allow direct debits to be setup in other peoples names... Top notch security you have there...

LOL as far as I am aware the bank is breaching thier own agreements when it comes to direct debits, isn't it illegal in the UK and probably most other countries for a bank to allow a direct debit in someone elses name and address be setup?

Anyone know what action I can take against the bank regarding this problem?

Thanks

Don't you think it is simply a mistake by the bank, I know should not happend, however it does from time to time.... I doubt they are doing anything like this.....

That kind of mistake cost me £600 though, not to mention the fact that they refused to give me the money back :(

Happened to me too last week. Apparently went for a loan broker however dont need a loan. Just moved into my brand new house :D

Threaten to take your money elsewhere. Alternatively you can contact the ombudsman. Either way the bank have a legal and moral obligation to assist you in getting your money back. If they dont get it back then they are liable for allowing the direct debit to be setup.

They boast about fraudulent use of accounts which is B****cks and then try to get the customer just to leave it.

Then again we are talking about halifax! Been with them too long and as of recent they are getting sloppier.

Maybe they think they can get away with blue murder since the courts decided that they do not have to pay back any bank charges.

Power Monsters!!!

Also note it is up to them to prove that you didn't setup the direct debit by contacting the company who took the money. They would have records and they have to show them to you on receipt of a letter instructing them to divulge all information held about you and your account.

Its free to get and only requires a letter so give it a bash!

Thanks for the input mate much appreciated...

The thing is Barclays is just as bad, I closed my account with Barclays last month because of direct debits that they was allowing paypal to setup even though paypal decided they wanted nothing to do with someone who runs a torrent site (best thing is i never accepted paypal as a donation method lol)

I guess the only safe place for my money is in my pockets, it only takes 1 click and £10k can disappear without question from the bank.

Oh don't worry thier high rollers who are earning them the most money are safe lol, thier money is protected but us 'non millionaires' dont get jack in the likes of security lol...
