Hello,

I'm New to this place, just looking for some answers to a few questions I have and you guys seem to have some knowledge.

When looking to start a hosting company (not just hosting, but offering as an option to design services) Do you think its better to resell services or get a dedicated server?

I know that resell would be cheaper, but I'm just looking for the server to pay for its self, not make a HUGE profit.

I don't know alot about admining a server, so I figure dedicated would give me a chance to learn a few things also.

It's better to learn the skills of server administration at home on your own PC. At the same time you can learn how to run a web hosting business as a reseller.

Think how would you feel if you were a client of a web hoster who doesn't really know how to admin a server? ;)

Yes start with reseller pack, if that works well you can expand your biz with dedicated.

Learn how to admin on a client server? nooooo. Unless you are offering free hosting, you'd either 1.) lose clients fast when (not if) you mess up or 2.) not learn much because you'll be too afraid to screw anything up.

Get a non-production server and practice with compiling kernel, getting patches, installing services, configuring new users, etc. while your webhost takes care of the real live server for you. ;)

Agreed. Focus on a business plan and choosing a reseller host. While your business grows, your knowledge of Linux can, too...but not at the expense of clients.

I would also agree that you should start out with a reseller account first. This way you can learn about the business in a much nicer environment.

I started out about 8 years ago as an affiliate for Virtualis Systems. Then I went to a reseller account. Now I have my own hosting company. If you want to get into this business then a business plan is basically required.

Remember the old saying "People that don't plan to succeed, DO PLAN to fail."
