I'm looking into communities and forums for a new venture, trying to see what exists:
I know
phpnuke
vbulletin
phpbb
ikonboard
i want a community like phpnuke but a little fancier, better. does vbulletin have anything with news, etc?

Actually I amvery familiar with phpnuke. The newer versions have eliminated the old security holes that some previous versions had.
I do however like postnuke. There is also http://www.xoops.org and a more scaleable solution (if you're moreof the developer type) at http://www.drupal.org
Good Luck!

www.threadsdev.com
You have to register to see many of the hacks and portal type things.. but you can see an idea of a community.

Threadsdev is just the UBB.Threads development community..
UBB.Threads is Infopop's most recent forum software, similar to UBB, but based in php/MySQL. The main portal screen you see is an addon to be comparable to vbportal, phpnuke, etc.
I run it, and it makes my job a lot easier as a webmaster. The new version will be coming out hopefully soon with more familiar portal features such as a calendar, file downloads archive, etc.
Here is my site I run with UBB.threads and many of the hacks/portal:

I wouldn't suggest UBB, many hosts disallow UBBs as they're major server hogs...
vBulletin is awesome in my opinion [no i'm not getting paid ] I've been using vB since February, and it's fully customizeable, with code, templates, everything...Personally I'd recommend vB to anyone as it has everything...

Ahh... I love the smell of ignorance in the morning.
Yes, you are correct in one aspect. UBB is a big resource hog. Because UBB (classic) was based on perl, and used a flat file system, not a database backend.
UBB.threads (notice the threads, and not classic) uses mysql/php, and infact, is even LESS resource intensive than a similarlly configured vBulletin. I too used vbulletin for my site, as when I started it, the only other good option was UBB.classic, which I didn't want. But when the php/mysql product came along, I switched. And I can tell you, compared to VB I noticed about 1/3rd less bandwidth, and probably even a bit greater reduction in system resource usage.
