Just wanted to say well done to Matt & Simon from www.unitedhosting.co.uk for their help in rescuing me when my host let me down big time! They took time out to set up accounts & help get the dns name server etc running - and THEY followed it up!

I have a popular property site that my host (well healed on this board) just stopped without warning. After several days it turned out the site was using too many apache processes - (thanks for working with me to sort it out).

I eventually got the site back up so I could get emails etc, and he'd said he may move the site to another server. Then bang site disappeared and no emails answered - whatsmore I could not get the data I had on his server. I got a reply saying to move host or reduce traffic (15gb) with no suggestions on reducing traffic! Then an offer of refund for last months bill and the admission that he admitting it was not handled as well as he should have handled it!

Anyway hopefully today the name server will be resolved and I can get on with life!

Sorry to harp on

Iain

I've spoken to Matt a few times on MSN and he uses my forums and i find him to be a very pleasant person who always try too help people. Not sure what Unitedhosting themselves are like though as i don't host any sites with them

Just got with UH myself and so far, so very good. Very good help from Matt getting setup with the new hosting package I ordered and he answered every question I had to ask. In a pleasant manner as well!

I chose UH based on this and a few other threads and the fact I see Matt posting here alot with good stuff. Glad I chose UH and I encourage others to do the same.

http://www.UnitedHosting.co.uk !!

(Not to mention they have VERY good plans/rates.)

Seems UH gets a lot of good feedback, but I've not seen much from people who have been there awhile just people who signed up recently ....

Not trying to imply anything I think it's great you found a good host. =)

Good luck.

I agree Darknet and I cannot speak for that.. I have had very good "getting goings" with other hosters I praised before as well that went sour for one reason or another. But up to now, the service, speed of answering quesitons, pricing and plan seem very good. Which, in this moshpit of webhosting (it seems) is a good thing.

"Seems UH gets a lot of good feedback, but I've not seen much from people who have been there awhile just people who signed up recently ....
"

There is a good reason for this DarktidesNET, A lot of people come here and signup then head straight for the requests board and get a host. They then leave it a week or so and post there feedback on how its gone - Hence a lot of people only have a handful of posts when they make a review.

Check out any review, not just ours. Most people with a good post count are hosts themselves and would not be making reviews :)

DarktidesNET
11-30-2002, 07:40 AM
I'm not implying your hosting is bad or anything. I'm just saying everyday you see 50 threads "THIS HOST RULES" than 1 or 2 weeks later that same person comes back with "OMG THEY TURNED TO CRAP!" etc....

Also, I don't think post count has anything to do with anything. I registered 1 month before you and you have 2000+ posts more than me. What's that say? I don't post a lot .... I post to what I feel I can contribute something to but I've seen (not saying you do because I don't see many threads with you in it :D) but I see a lot of people post 30+ replies to a thread consisting of nothing but smilies or lol or whatever ... it wouldn't be hard to get up in the thousands.

As for reviews, I personally disregard 99% of them because of what AtarI said -- "I agree Darknet and I cannot speak for that.. I have had very good "getting goings" with other hosters I praised before as well that went sour for one reason or another. But up to now, the service, speed of answering quesitons, pricing and plan seem very good. Which, in this moshpit of webhosting (it seems) is a good thing." Most people signup and post a review instantly then later retract it ... I don't think you can tell anything about a host unless you've been with them for over 1-2 months.

I'm not here to try to make your company sound bad or anything ... just trying to clarify my post (which your client AtarI did well).

I've even scoped out your ded servers (If I remember correctly they're in NAC (?)) so who knows, perhaps down the road we'll do business and I could post a review ;)

ok well thanks for the comments, try posting them on a different thread next time - I would like to try and keep review threads clean from banter so I can point people towards them for publicity purposes. thanks.

I'll be coming back to give my review of them in a month and in 3 months as well just to be totally fair.

And I don't pull punches. If I am paying you for a service, I expect fully what you offer. And yes, while all I can speak for *is* the getting setup and running, that is worthy to alot of folks as it seems to be getting a bit scary out there with hosts and even getting a good reception during this initial phase.

See you in a month! :dunce:

Wow! You have some nerve! A customer of yours posts a review here, and now you are trying to control the content of the thread.

You point people to threads at WHT for a publicity or to see a review? Maybe that's on the up and up; but it sure makes the original post now seem suspicious, like you are giving the poster something and enticing them to post a good review here for you. I'm not saying that you are doing this; just that it looks suspicious.

UH-Matt
11-30-2002, 04:06 PM
No im just trying to avoid posts exactly like the one you just posted - completely irrelevant to the subject of this post. Nobody asked for your opinion.

HingyGuy
11-30-2002, 04:16 PM
well whatever UH is doing it's keeping them in the top 5 of the main hosting forum for the last 3 days .... but it's ok ... since a person with 2266 posts would NEVER intentinally bump up an 'advertising' thread :D

UH-Matt

HingyGuy:

When people end there post with things like:

"I'm not saying that you are doing this; just that it looks suspicious."

How can we not reply?

A customer posts a good review and people just HAVE to try and doubt it - Its happened to soo many review threads and im getting sick of it.

And your post to darktides about not posting things in this thread was relevant and "asked for"?

This is a prime example of why sometimes it is not a good idea for a host to follow up in a praise thread about their company. You can control threads in your own forum; but not at WHT.

AtaRi.
11-30-2002, 04:25 PM
Wow some of you folks just seem out to "get" someone or something.. But i understand.

To be fair, Matt didn't bring this thread back up.. I did. I remembered it being here praising them for their work, I had the same experience and brought it back up.

I am sure everyone realizes that just because we praise their work thus far, doens't mean it *can't* go sour. We are only speaking on what we know, which is more than what some of you do.

Believe me.. I will be back if stuff goes sour. That should be an understood given and not something that needs to be pointed out just because people chose to give positive feedback.

Somebody not so long ago suggested that hosts should not be allowed to reply to 'praise' threads as it only 'bumps' up their thread ... but it's a tough one .. since basically the whole idea of WHT is advertising ... it's just how you do it that should be questioned .... by being helfull and providing 'relevant' info is a good advert by itself .... thanking people for every good review is not really good ... it's basically on par with registering with a new nick and saying 'They Rock' ....

But in all fairness this is a competition who will come up on top .... so all is fair in love and war .... the thing is just to be sneaky enough so that people don't know that you are advertising when you actually are ...

AtaRi.
11-30-2002, 04:35 PM
I think another important thing to remember is yeah.. There are a few crap hosts out there. Relying on your past experiences, and then coming into a thread that praises work from a totally different host you have no personal experience with, implying because you had bad experience in the past, this one just could very well go sour as well, is just tacky. Again, you are speaking based on your PAST experience with OTHER hosts.. Not this one.

If you had given an example of a bad experience *with* UH, that would be different.

UH-Matt

Nobody has bad experience with us :)

Matt, Simon and everyone at UH are some of the most honest and hard-working people in the industry, and deserve all the praise they recieve on this board. People that don't like it and/or are jealous probably shouldn't even respond, IMO. Reviews are meant as a resource and a point of reference, and should be treated as such.
