Ever had a domain that you let expire, or just forgot to renew and some other hosting company picked it up?

I had one for a few years, honestly, forgot to renew it, heh, and Enom who was the registrar, would not release it after the fact. They kept it "unavailable" for.. oh boy, nearly a year it seems.

Happened to think about it today, and went to check it out, I see that Hostgator seems to have registered it for whatever reason. But whoisguard makes it hard to say for sure.

I'm just curious, why would any hosting company pickup a competitors brand name, are they just thinking of the traffic from the site? Forgive me if I sound off track, I'm not exactly a domain name pro here :)

is it registered or *hosted* by hostgator? Yes, Enom has a right to auction expired domains if they are worth it.

Due to whoisguard info on the domain registrant I couldn't tell ya, but the domain points to a Hostgator page for knowledgebase, ticket system, billing, cpanel login, etc etc. So I assume Hostgator themselves registered it, unless someone just wanted to point it to their site, heh.. who knows.
