Hi
Which is better to have so that you can actually own your own files: a cgi wrapper (ie; scgi-bin) -or- su-exec?. My host keeps offering to chown them for me (manually) but I told him that since files are generated on-the-fly each time a new member signs up using my script, this is not at all practical. Seems to me that I should'nt even have to worry about chowning and such things. Is this "normal" or do I just need to find another host?.
Thank's

I'd like to know which is better too... cgi-wrap or suEXEC? Most C Panel hosts seem to offer both which AFAIK is unnecessary. I think it is just because cgi-wrap comes with C Panel; but I could be wrong.
My guess is that suEXEC is better. And there are also some other wrappers that give ownership rights I think and one of them is SUSE.

cgi-wrapper is crap. If the host doen't have suExec, go with someone who has.

If you are running scripts and have the need to open up user/script generated files, edit, delete, etc., not having suExec is a waste of time and a real pain the arse.

I agree but a lot of web hosts are not exactly in the business to make things the way it ought to be and a lot of them don't know how to do things and so they will tell you what they know or what is easier for them.

It is not normal but most hosts using cpanel don't have that module installed. Find another host - I host with Ventures Online. They didn't have it either, when I first signed-up with them and I was feeling the same way. After I got frustrated I told them I will leave. I don't think they did it because I told them so but I assume they might have had other people asking for it too. Anyway, I had decided to leave and they came up with a new plan and at that time I told them I will sign-up if they had the suExec module and now they install it on all of their new servers.
