View Full Version : Best domain name registrar
jcodemasters 01-08-2010, 09:05 PM Hello all,
I have been using Godaddy since past 7 years. They are just OK to me. Lately I have been getting too much spam from whois and phone calls and I am just sick of it. I would like to add privacy protection for my 60+ domains but Godaddy charges $8 for one which simply I can't affoard. Anyone knows best domain registrar which offers free privacy protection and must not greedy like Godaddy.
I have seen whenever I search domain name next day that domain is gone. Looks like Godaddy is playing with customers.
Any suggestion would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Techno 01-08-2010, 09:08 PM netearthone.com (sign up as a reseller to get best price) and name.com have free private WHOIS.
woods01 01-08-2010, 09:41 PM How do you know that the phone calls and spam is related to the whois information?
GoDaddy probably provides legitimate privacy protection where-is NE1 provides non-complaint (bogus) privacy protection (however icann won't do anything since it's directi).
Nothing wrong with NE1, we use em, I would like to see the privacy protection a little more professional.
Techno 01-08-2010, 10:23 PM NE1 provides non-complaint (bogus) privacy protection Can you elaborate on this?
jarhead21 01-08-2010, 10:37 PM Question?
So the OP has these 60 domains and wants privacy on them all, so would'nt he have to transfer them to another registrar and than go through the privacy over there? I was reading on a google search about different registrar's love tacking on a nice MEATY fee if you transfer from them and some block the transfer or confiscate your domain.
Food for thought I'd say. Hey Godaddy has to have the money for the bimbo's and the new building he's building for a call center I think it is.
jackpx 01-08-2010, 11:31 PM name.com is an excellent registrar and have free private whois.
Qtama 01-08-2010, 11:46 PM i think netearthone or directi is great..on directi you can set to Privacy Protection and change your Whois Format
I agree 110% with jackpx. You should go with Name.com. You should checkout their coupon codes for transferring. Or, better still, negotiate a better price with them directly for all your transfers/registrations/renewals.
jcodemasters 01-09-2010, 07:46 AM How do you know that the phone calls and spam is related to the whois information?
I recently changed my number and only gave it to few friends and updated whois information for my all domains. After a week I start getting calls like buying a product, link exchange etc.
davet 01-09-2010, 12:17 PM They don't have free Whois protection but we use http://enom.com which we have been very happy with for quite sometime now.
jcodemasters 01-09-2010, 12:51 PM They don't have free Whois protection but we use http://enom.com which we have been very happy with for quite sometime now.
https://www.enom.com/pricing.asp $10.95 almost $4 costly comparing to godaddy
forgot to mention they also charge setup fees. It sounds like enom is only for resellers.
jcodemasters 01-09-2010, 12:56 PM Found namecheap.com which offers free protection. Any experience with namecheap?
BristolSue 01-09-2010, 03:54 PM Found namecheap.com which offers free protection. Any experience with namecheap?
namecheap is free for only the first year. After that you pay. I highly recommend name.com. I use it for all my domains.
CanSpace 01-09-2010, 04:57 PM you could try to open an enom reseller account... free privacy protection and prices are decent
Krang 01-10-2010, 07:07 AM My favorites are NameCheap and Name.com.
Found namecheap.com which offers free protection. Any experience with namecheap?
I've been using them for over 7 years without any problems. I would definitely recommend them.
panzerfly 01-10-2010, 11:49 AM you can also check register-one.com. free whois for every domain with them even after the first year.
liror 01-10-2010, 03:36 PM IMO - moniker - they are good
Hostbuster347 01-11-2010, 08:19 AM name.com is good but doesnt have reselling capabilities.. In that case resellerclub or netearthone will be good since they both have free privacy for life of the domain
24HourDomainer 01-11-2010, 05:41 PM GoDaddy not only is trust worthy, Adam Dicker is the TDNAM's president. We got a Domainer operating their system, and not only do they have the best prices, they also allow you to market your domains using their system!
There are many coupon code for cheap privacy protection on godaddy .
You can start here:
http://www.google.com/search?q=godaddy+promo+code&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:mk:official&client=firefox-a
the first result is good i have never look the other ones....
24HourDomainer 01-11-2010, 08:43 PM privacy is a waste of money.
rojole 01-12-2010, 10:25 PM I prefer HEXONET. They have a large variety of TLDs!
grahamrb 01-13-2010, 05:34 AM privacy is a waste of money.
In this case I would say it is, as a general rule it isn't. As your real details have already been placed on the net and would be available through whois history. You may reduce the spam but it is too late to stamp it out on your current domains.
joe-banana 01-17-2010, 12:10 AM privacy is a waste of money.
Gets rid of spam & stops users from knowing who owns the domain.
Most of my lot is at Name.com & Godaddy so far they have been great except Godaddy's UI can be frustratingly slow & user-angry not friendly. :P

Not True, If I want your identity - all I have to is pay for a domain tool to get your info! so privacy is a waste money
SPAM? are you serious - i own 200+ .com's and not once have i received spam from spammers in the last 10 years.
IslandDataCenter 01-17-2010, 01:49 AM I think Directi is the best and updates nameservers the quickest.

I get tons of scams specially from domainsecondhand.com on a lot of my no privacy domains.
Yeah but you have to pay for it its a small hassle.

thats because your email is stored in their spam list! change it. It's healthy to change email accounts every 6 months for domain accounts. This will keep hackers and scammers off your back. Never use free email services to manage your domain names or your asking for theft!
slweb 01-19-2010, 05:00 AM I registered a bunch of domains at name.com last year, and they have issues with their private registration. I sent several test emails to the private email addresses for my domains, and those emails were successfully forwarded to me maybe around 20% of the time. The other 80% of the time I'd get an email from mailer-daemon saying that the email couldn't be sent after X hours and it'd keep trying, and eventually mailer-daemon would send another email saying it failed and gave up.
I contacted name.com about this, and they replied a few times and then I never heard back from them - I guess they couldn't figure out the problem.
Now my domains are close to expiring, and I need to either renew at name.com or find a better registrar. I just sent a bunch of test emails again to my private addresses, and they still haven't fixed the problem.
Ikaros 01-19-2010, 08:29 AM i was using godaddy.com in the past, but i lost my trust in them. So i came up to name.com and so far i never had a problem.
Jonathan J 01-19-2010, 09:45 AM Name.com and namecheap.com. - I like namecheap best with the features it has like being able to give partial control to someone else's account etc.
BillionDollarMedia 01-19-2010, 06:03 PM Moniker and GoDaddy, they are industry leaders for a reason. Name.com is also a decent company and the only thing that bothers me about namecheap is that they don't offer support over the phone.
Disrelation 01-19-2010, 07:12 PM NameCheap.com all the way.

Thats odd, I'm having the same problem with my name.com account. I did recall testing this a long time ago and it worked fine then !

Last week I tried it a few times and it failed more often than it succeeded. Today I contacted Name.com again, and the guy forwarded the issue to their development team. He will let me know what happens (I hope). I also sent some more test emails today, and they were all successfully forwarded to me. So the problem is happening on an intermittent basis.
azen531 01-20-2010, 12:19 PM namecheap is the best just go for it.

You wouldn't happen to be sending those emails from Comcast, would you?
I just noticed that all the emails that I send from my work account, Gmail, or Yahoo get successfully forwarded to me. It seems like it's only the emails from Comcast that do not get forwarded.
Soskel34 01-20-2010, 06:15 PM nevermind!!
pls delete
inspiron 01-21-2010, 10:26 AM Namecheap seems to be one of the best registrar. Its cheap too.
Dan Madiou 01-22-2010, 06:37 AM Sibername.com. I have domain name and web hosting with them and I'm happy.
lethal0r 01-22-2010, 08:02 AM ive always found godaddy to be fine, low prices especially if you remember to always use the many discount codes on offer.
looks like namecheap are popular on here, next time I buy a batch of domains i'll compare the two for prices.
Name.com is quite good as compare to godaddy. Both are really good websites. I still dont understand the name of GoDaddy :D.. What strategy is behind with that name :P
marcbarak 01-22-2010, 08:54 AM we manage thousands of domains for clients with many under our eNom presence and we have never been disappointed so for what that is worth we would give eNom a thumbs up

Afraid not, I'm on a local UK isp at the moment. I tried sending again and whilst certain emails work, my Zoho mail would consistently get the error msg. Yahoo seems fine. Odd mail filtering system they have there.
linuxclark 01-22-2010, 10:18 AM namecheap is the best for me,
the domain control panel is easy to use
support staff are very frendly
most of my domains are hosted with namecheap
infinite_in 01-22-2010, 10:34 AM namecheap.com offers free Privacy and they offer excellent customer support.

Thanks. I just created a Zoho email account, and emails from there are not getting forwarded for me either. I have reported this to Name.com.
maxt0r 01-24-2010, 11:09 AM im using dynadot , it has very good prices.

I read somewhere that GoDaddy is offering free domain whois if you renew 5 or more domains but I would recommend that you move away from them. As you said they are really greedy. I am using NetEarth One (sign up as a reseller to get better pricing) and they are going good so far. Find the easter egg on their site and get Tier-2 for free, PM me if you need any help in finding it!
Soskel34 01-24-2010, 03:00 PM godaddy is horrible but has great prices
livtext 05-11-2010, 08:56 AM enom rules...90% of domain reselers are enom resellers.
BalticServers Andrius 05-11-2010, 08:58 AM Enom is pretty good. We are using for our clients.
enom has a great API but I would not say they were cheap is the downside.
BH-Greg 05-11-2010, 09:34 AM I've only used Godaddy and Namecheap, and would only say that out of those two I think 100% Namecheap is better than any other company out there. I feel this way because the design and the way they have everything built and ran is nice. They give out great promos and know what they are doing.
alan88 07-31-2010, 10:41 AM the cheapest i have found at the moment with free private whois is internet.bs
Techy 02-25-2011, 04:18 PM Name.com - they're good.
neumannu47 02-26-2011, 12:53 AM netearthone.com wants $29.95 for a domain name. What am I missing? name.com wants $7.75 for a transfer.

Here is where you should be looking at: http://reseller.netearthone.com/reseller.php?action=pricing
:D
dotmne 02-26-2011, 05:53 AM I also using Godaddy, and yes lately their offer spams getting more annoying
and5rey 02-26-2011, 06:02 AM I use Godaddy, Namecheap and Dynadot.
bsdvps 02-26-2011, 09:35 AM 1and1's DNS control panel is garbage. They were notified about a bug where domains do not register under privacy protection and they still have yet to fix it
DragonDF 03-03-2011, 12:40 PM Same thing like the other thread.
Each one wrote what he uses.. and forget to describe PRICES.
I think show the prices could be a good thing.
Maybe a list that the other one completes.
:)
Ray Jonnes 03-03-2011, 01:46 PM I use NameCheap.com for 4 years and totally happy. Previously i used GoDaddy but now i use it only for bulk search. NameCheap has very good friendly interface and great control panel. And always there are a tons of coupons for every month with 5-20% price reductions. So just check NameCheap.com and try to register 1 domain and you will see the difference from GoDaddy.
ChatCadet 03-03-2011, 02:55 PM I really like namecheap. I like that I can quickly access the features I need and without a lot of clicks get things done. Like godaddy is a joke click click click click click click.
hostmasterscom 03-03-2011, 09:05 PM I would say either Godaddy or Name.com gets my vote
biggeorge 03-09-2011, 11:29 AM I'm brand new to the forum. Good to be here. I joined specifically because of this thread.
A little about myself... I've been developing websites for about 16 years... back in the days when domain names were $75 year. I've been hosting for about 13 years. I started with one server in a small ISP, then graduated to managing my own servers in my house with 2 T1 lines. I currently lease 3 dedicated servers with Softlayer (formally The Planet) and I'm more than happy with their service and support. I own about 22 domains and each one of them are live, functional websites that I've developed and manage personally. In total I host 122 domains - all registered through Bulk Register.
I've been with Bulk Register since 1999 and have always enjoyed and appreciated the service I got from them. Honestly, up until the past few months I couldn't say anything bad about them. And in all the years - up until today - I've only had to call them once. My past 4 domain registrations have been frustrating. The are sneaking their "value added services" into the shopping cart, and unless you're very observant, you'll could miss it. They don't initially charge you for most of these services, so it's easy to miss it during checkout - they cloak it with "30-days free", so it doesn't add a fee to the cart. My last 3 registrations were tethered with "Rich Content", which I'm guessing I somehow missed, and after 30-days I saw a $10.00 charge to my CC. Each time I went in and canceled it. On my last registration I was beyond careful to not get sucked in, and alas I got popped with their "gomobi" service. So today I was popped $10.00 on my CC. I called and complained, and honestly my impression was the rep who answered (Richard) could not care less how many domains I have registered nor how long I've been a customer. I've opened a trouble ticket requesting refunds... but I'm not holding my breath.
I've decided it's time to move on. I've opened an account with name.com and will (hopefully) be transferring all 122 domains to them. Through the suggestion of someone in this thread I'm going to wait until they are open and attempt to negotiate the fees for the transfer and the registration/re-registration fees. I'm staying optimistic. :)
f4rrukh 03-10-2011, 08:12 AM I think name.com is best for transferring the domains, as they are not free with whois privacy but you can use 'FREEWHOIS' as promo to avail free whois privacy, and if you will go with 60 domains, they are giving reseller privilege to people who own 25+ domains, so you can register/renew/transfer the .com / .net / .org etc domains in just $7.99, I guess this is best, panel is also very user friendly and easy to handle.
regards,
douchbeni 03-10-2011, 11:36 AM In my opinion sibername.com is the best domain name registrar. Good support and really friendly people are working there. Plus affordable price.
Mr_White 03-10-2011, 04:06 PM namecheap is the cheapest one
Valusten 03-11-2011, 05:58 AM I think that there is no best Registrar, there is only the best one for your needs. Compare all possible options and choose the best one.
Jimbrown123 03-11-2011, 06:15 AM Namecheap.com includes e-mail and URL forwarding, security features, free transfers and domain management control with all domain name registrations.
Acheron 03-12-2011, 06:11 AM I think that there is no best Registrar, there is only the best one for your needs. Compare all possible options and choose the best one.
Well said. I wouldn't go back to GoDaddy if someone else paid for all of my domains though - worst customer service I've ever experienced. I'll stick with Name.com, Namecheap, or internet.bs from now on.
