I'd like to take the corporate server for unitedcolo, but are there any idea's about downtime etc.? They dont talk about how mcuh % uptime guarantee, but that would be nice to know :)

Our Cisco® powered network is connected to a 100 percent fiber-optic, nonblocking OC-192 global backbone with diversely redundant and multi-homed (BGP-4) Gigabit Ethernet connections to Internap®, Williams®, and Cogent®. United.Colo also has additional private peering arrangement with PAIX®, NYIX®, PAIX-NY®, and Equinix-Ashburn®. To ensure maximum reliability and superior scalability, United.Colo integrates sophisticated and proven technologies such as Metro Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), telco grade terabit routers, and high-end switches.

Their network seems to be quite ok. Am i right? :)

Plz, if you want to say something about it, give reasons, so I know that I'm getting complete answers :)

Many thanks!

Their support is excellent but I wish I can say the same about their uptime.

Their support is excellent but I wish I can say the same about their uptime.I'll second that. Seems their network is far to vunarable to attacks (from within and external). They really need to start doing something about that. Also the reason I cancelled my server.

Also don't see why they put everything on 10 MBIT.

If you do a quick search of the bulletin board you'll find they have improved although they still do experience a fair amount of downtime. Hopefully with each network outage they are improving their network instead of doing a quick fix.

yes, they do improved, from 100mb port to 10mb port, from no content control to much strict control, from offline couple times a week to several times with longer time, which could last couple hours...

i saw many businesses like that company, a good start, but can never keep up with their promised services... a sad tragedy for all the customers. i just canceled my server too

Their higher plans are not on a 10mb port, or else they couldn't push the alotted bandwidth.

From what I've gathered, only their 5000 GB/month plan is on a 100 MBIT port, the rest is all on 10 MBIT, including the 3000 GIG/month plan (so you would never be able to push the full 3000 GIGS each month).

My router MRTG graphs for my $199/mo servers read 100Mbit. Never tried pushing that much though i've hit at least 9Mbit.

As for content control they've always been against IRC and that's the only thing they constrict you to not having. Most networks do the same so it's not really surprising.

the 100mbit is of course referring to your port ... but that doesn't mean it isn't capped at 10mbit. They are not going to change all their cisco routers to 10mbit ports ;) so they can cap. I would think they used software capping, or on the router configuration. In any case, all servers are 10mbit except the 699, 5TB plan which they just started to offer. They use to offer 100mbit for all, but changed their minds. I cancelled my server mainly cos they change their minds often (and without notification) and each change is all detrimental to the customer.

same reason i pulled out my test server from there.

Realy ? A 10mb/s at full use for 30 days will make more than that...something like 3.325 Gb/s

I don't think they have to offer a 100 mb port for the 100 Gb - 500 Gb - and the - 1.000 Gb

But the 3.000 and 5.000 Wold be nice ( well the 5.000 Gb is a 100 MB port but i guess they cold put the 3.000 too... )

Originally, it was just the lower end plans that was changed to 10mbit. Midway through my order for the 3TB plan, they changed their minds and tell me that they don't offer it no more. It was the straw that broke the camel's back (Having a few other incidents where they just change their minds)

They need to put a good plan on paper and stick it that :)

There is one..

How about the $49 servers it 30 Gb but some times avalible ? LOL

How about 3.000 Gb Plan it a 100 MB/s caped ?

How about a setup our a higher mon. fee for a 100 Mb ?

If it is a software that they use they can put 20-30 MB on the cap. for you to have some more juice to play it...

I have a few questions for those who have servers at UC. I'm thinking of getting a box with them, and want to know:

1. How is the network speed? I'm attracted to them, what with being in PAIX/He.net. Almost all traffic to the west coast gets routed through the Bay area, and having the servers right there seems like a very good idea. I have received very appealing ping times from the East coast and Europe.
What I'm really interested in is the throughput. How fast can you push the lines through your server?

2. Have you had to deal with after-hours support? Do they answer e-mail during the night, or does it sit there until 9AM the next workday?

i've hit about 9500k/sec outgoing on one of my $199/mo servers. i wasn't trying to go for a speed record or anything, just happened to peak at that. they answer e-mails promptly at around 9pm western.

Their speeds are good. I can max the cap 10mbit/s 24/7 (I tried). It however depends on what you want to do with it. I don't like their constant terms changing without communication, thus I left. However I can't fault them on the speed.

As for support, they answer 24/7 promptly. I am in another timezone, so when I work, it's dead in the night. Can't fault them on speed. however, it will be better if you can't fault them on the content of their replies. Sometimes it is less than helpful.

they're down again

edit: luckily this only lasted a few minutes

I was monitoring them with Netmechanic tonight and it picked up the outage.

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking of going with them to host media files and nothing else.
