View Full Version : Shared Hosting Expectations

I’m seeking an ASP.NET hosting service with features that I do not feel are unreasonable. During the past few weeks I’ve “sampled” 5 hosting providers, with prices ranging from $4 to $11 per month. The hosting companies chosen were based upon reviews read here and elsewhere, along with information provided by the companies themselves. Some providers were very helpful, others shouldn’t be in the IT business. I am not the world’s foremost expert webmaster. I am however a professional who’s been around the block more than once. I do not think I have unreasonable expectations. The one thing I found is that none provide the features and service I expect, regardless of what they charge.

What I’m looking for is a reasonably well managed and performing shared Windows server to support:

2 GB storage
20 GB Bandwidth (Don’t really need this much)
2 Domains (Minimum)
10 Subdomains (Minimum)
10 Mailboxes (Minimum)
2-3 Mail forwards
2-3 Mail groups
3-4 Mail lists with < 100 addressees (List serv functions?)
.NET 2.x
Zend optimized and/or ionCube Support
Secured folders
2 mySQL
1 MS SQL
ODBC

NotNetPanel and Smartermail are preferred, but not deal breakers.

Do I have false expectations for $11 per month?

Your requirements sound reasonable. Do you have any requirements for specific flavor of Windows (Windows 2003/Windows 2008)?

We are a small not for profit organization. Our mailing lists get used 1-2 times per month. Would be on Unix, but we have a .NET interface to a small Sql Server database. So, to answer your question, Windows 2003 or 2008 isn't an issue.

I don't know of many Windows hosts that support Zend/Ioncube. Your requirements are very reasonable though!

Reliablesite doesn't support Zend and ionCube, but I've found several hosts who do. I've not found anyone with all the above listed features. We'll see what the future holds as competition drives providers to be more accomodating to technology and user requirements.

Hi, I think like the rest of the replies that your not asking to much but I would like to know what sort or uptime and support you'll need for this project?

Regards Terry

Support:
No more than the usually getting started stuff. Codes already written and running on different hosting servers.

Uptime: Obviously we'd like our sites to be up 24/7, but he typically advertised 99.9% is fine.
