View Full Version : advise for VPS game Server.
larva_pro 01-05-2010, 10:20 PM Hello to all, this is my second post , i been reading many threats in the section of Vps offers.
Currently i am with 1and1.com , my experience is really bad , im guessing they are allocating more customer then they server can handle.
my application is for a Game server , i got the 1gb RAM VPS , and the problem is every day Virtuozzo do a backup right ? well every day my application loose connection between them , the CPU give really high spikes.
in resume, Daily from one entire hour players can't connect to the game due of this problem with Virtuozzo of the spikes of cpu , I call to the technicians , they where useless. they say they can't do nothing due that virtuozzo make daily backup for the entire customers allocated in the same server where i am.
so here i am asking for a decent VPS company .
specs need it:
- 1gb RAM
- 10Gb Hdd
- 100GB monthly transfer
- Windows OS (preference server edition x32 ore x64)
- good upload speed.
- location any place in the USA.
budget 25 to 35.00
neXeon 01-05-2010, 10:59 PM Hello,
What game server are you hosting that requires Windows? You could probably get better performance out of a linux VPS with equivalent specs.
nwmcsween 01-06-2010, 12:12 AM Your experience is going to be bad with any mainstream vps provider unless they make specific cputime shares amoung the vps's since almost all are fair based. Running a game server requires a large amount of cputime *with* little scheduling differences between "quantums" or slices or whatever you wish to call it so a vps is a bad idea as you'll get unpredictable updates to the game.
njoker555 01-06-2010, 12:28 AM I'd recommend linux to run the server. I run a few gameservers on a home server run on linux, works great. Much more secure than Linux and if handled properly, it's stable. Other than that you should be able to find a good server with what you need for your budget, I'd say more around $30-$35. But you should look around and see what you find.
And game server doesn't necessarily mean a lot of CPU usage. You'll get CPU spikes when there is a lot of traffic but I'm on a dual core amd cpu, runs fine at 2-4 load even when connections max out.

Of course i will prefer linux , but the software is not compatible for linux yet , even the project is Open Source no one has work in the source to be able to compile in linux.
so at the moment im stock with windows.
@NeXeon the server is for the game Phantasy star online blue burst.
i have others games server like RO and L2 they work great in others Vps linux based , i always prefer linux , but this server is not for linux at the moment.
any other suggestion instance of linux?
larva_pro 01-06-2010, 03:36 AM sorry for the double post , cant edit anymore.
i find this site, can any one say something about it ?

good ? bad?
[CTI] Todd 01-06-2010, 04:13 AM Check nfoservers.com, they have a suitable one for like 39.99 -- close to your budget.
Softsys Hosting 01-06-2010, 05:02 AM Your requirement / budget is fair enough. For dedicated resources without resource hogging, I'll recommend you to look for Hyper-V based Windows VPS. Since Hyper-V is more of hardware virtualization, you are bound to get dedicated resources with better performance and more stability.

Makes sense, but what about Using WINE? Just yesterday I set up Wine on a Fedora VPS to run a program meant to only run on windows and it works perfectly. Unless the game is something that's even more than that?
VertigoVPS-Mike 01-06-2010, 03:18 PM Using WINE could work, however I'm concerned about the performance. Valence Hosting has some nice VPS deals...I've been with them for 2 months and I have no complaints.
Their site is just valencehosting.com

pointless the software dont work with Wine. and beside is worst then running in windows.
@softy Hosting , any recommended place ?
and what about this company ?> http ://www .webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=915629&highlight=turnkey
any one with experience with them.
thanks to all.
VertigoVPS-Mike 01-06-2010, 07:04 PM TurnKey isnt bad...I had a friend who went with them.
ramnet 01-06-2010, 08:33 PM ServerComplete does a good job with their VPS products - I have one of their Linux vps and it's very good - I suspect their Windows product line is just as good if not better.
Best of luck in your search for a provider.
integrii 01-15-2010, 03:07 PM My Favorite has been www.ramhost.us. This guy is really great to work with and goes out of his way for every customer.

Thanks for the recommendation (yes, mods, this is a client of ours) however we don't do Windows - we only do Linux
As hardened Linux guru's we don't particularly like Microsoft very much :stickout:
We have no problem with Linux-based games however ;)
integrii 01-15-2010, 03:23 PM We meet again, Ramhost!
you are welcome, you deserve it!

QuickWeb-Roel 03-01-2010, 04:28 PM Your best bet is a Xen powered VPS and use Linux OS, really stable platform for game server.
edge100x 03-08-2010, 03:51 PM I can't blame people for liking Linux, because it's flexible, configurable, the price is right, and there are more providers who support it. But, Valve games (GoldSrc, Source, Orangebox) do use fewer resources on Windows, and many games (like the OP's) do not support Linux at all. For game server hosting, Windows is a very solid choice.
DarkX411 03-09-2010, 10:31 PM You could try Frantech, especially if you're running a game server.
https://my.frantech.ca/cart.php?a=confproduct&i=0
1GB Ram, 60 GB HDD, and 1000GB(I think) Bandwidth/Month, running you 25 u bucks a month.
They also let you choose between Linux or Windows, so I guess thats not a problem.
zapruder 03-10-2010, 10:25 AM I agree. A Hyper-V based VPS is what you need.
