View Full Version : Building Desktop Monitoring Client.
HTTP404 01-04-2010, 01:38 PM Hello All.
I am building a monitoring application which will go online for free download.
I am just curious, as most WHT users have servers and exsisting monitoring what sort of features you would be intrested in.
So far I have planned;
The app will run in the tray on low resources
A simple panel on first run with 'traffic light' status (i.e red light & green light)
Connection alert, incase you system cannot connect to the internet.
Message box on server down.
Monitor Apache, POP3, cPanel and DirectAdmin.
.txt reports
I know there are many solutions on the market, but I want to continue this project for personal reasons.
So what would you guys like to see on a monitoring application?
Please make all comments constructive.
Cape Dave 01-04-2010, 05:14 PM Monitor MySQL maybe?
Send server down message email to smartphone?
BH-Greg 01-04-2010, 06:22 PM Monitor MySQL sounds pretty cool.
HTTP404 01-05-2010, 01:56 PM Yeah I will add SQL.
I was looking at SMS, but this would require a lot of work. Either allowing users to login to an sms api, or charging for the software....... etc.
I will add E-Mail too.
Dave - Just199 01-05-2010, 02:38 PM Might be nice to monitor load as well
Actually might be nice to click to open some stats like Load, Disk, Memory, etc.
HTTP404 01-08-2010, 08:10 AM @Dave -
Im trying just to make a lighter weight client just to alert you to downtime, however with further though to what you have said the features you suggested I could easily impliment, however would require the servers to run windows with .net, this would limit its usage, so for now I may just stick to monitoring uptime and control panels.
Thanks for the suggestion, I don't want to appear as un-grateful.
activelobby4u 01-09-2010, 03:10 AM GFI monitor is one windows application you can try and learn for features ;)
David 01-10-2010, 01:53 PM Use adobe air.
Cape Dave 01-10-2010, 03:14 PM BTW I think this is a great app and wold definitely use it myself.
HTTP404 01-10-2010, 06:01 PM I dont really want to use adobe air, to me the adobe air framework is slow and doesnt run very well. I would rather limit my application to windows, and have it running fast and good than learning the adobe air framework etc.
@Cape_Dave - Great I will PM you.
intellitech 01-10-2010, 06:19 PM Another good component to your application, would be to create an Iphone App for it too .. that's how things are going these days. Monitoring is great, but mobile monitoring is best!
HTTP404 01-10-2010, 06:36 PM Hmmm, would rather port to Mac and Linux OS before iPhone :P
Well as the iPhone is on vodafone when I get mine in Feb. i'll download the SDK and have a little play.
HTTP404 01-17-2010, 06:46 PM @ ALL
