I'd like to ask your suggestion on web-based control panel.

I have a few low end vps boxes with at least 128MB RAM. I use it for my own purpose, not for business.

So far I already tried to install and use Webmin+Virtualmin and Kloxo. The services that I use mainly only web server (apache), dabatase (mysql) and mail server, it doesn't take to much memory compared if i use spamassain, bind, ftp, etc as well.

My personal opinion for virtualmin is great. Kloxo is good also. But, I am worried about kloxo since I heard the current (and maybe future) development of Kloxo is somewhat uncertain.

Now, I am going to see the possibility to install another control panel instead of virtualmin and kloxo.

Of course I can save my RAM usage by using command line only without installing control panel. But for automation purpose, I want to install control panel.

I see on Wikipedia about other CP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_hosting_control_panels but still don't know yet which one has minimal RAM usage.

So, what do you guys suggest for control panel? I'd like to try and see...

Thanks in advance.

I'm using Virtualmin+Webmin on my low end VPSs. If you are running MySQL and Mailserver, I don't think 128MB is enough for you.

Using Kloxo with Lighttpd is the best experience i've ever had with a low end VPS. If you can use Lighttpd instead of Apache then that may work a lot better for you

You can use vtonf. It's an opensource control panel for VPS. I will also recommend to you to increase your RAM. 128 MB is not used even for desktop PCs and is way too low for a server

I've had quite a few customers ask this question. The problem is, I allways used to recommend Kloxo/LXAdmin due to its low memory footprint, and huge number of features. Seriously, it really was on par with cPanel (but with an uglier skin!).

Unfortunatly, now that its development is somewhat restricted by the 'consortium' that have refused to release it as opensource, I can no longer recommend it.

Instead, heres a few ways of going about it using different control panels:

Webmin + Virtualmin (as you already stated)
DirectAdmin (you can get licenses for around $6 each for VPS hosting and it has a low memory footprint -- no lighttpd support however)
ispCP

VIPoint stated 'You can use vtonf' however this is incorrect. vtonf is a control panel to manage OpenVZ nodes, and not a 'web hosting' control panel. In addition, its development stalled over a year ago, and it is not compatible with recent OS releases.

For OpenVZ control panels, there's a list on the OpenVZ wiki which I update every few months here: http://wiki.openvz.org/Control_panels

Hope this helps!

As suggested here already, another +1 to Kloxo with lighttpd (in place of Apache) and djbdns (in place of BIND).

Again a +1 for Kloxo as this is more user friendly and easy to manage like Cpanel. As you are only using for just one or few specific domains Litespeed or lighthttpd can help you reduce the resource usage.
