I personally like Roundcube, its open source and does support external SMTP servers. Have you any other requirements other than the SMTP authentication?

Roundcube is good looking and stable. However, watch out for the latest edition as the previous edition was buggy.

yeah, me too, we have squirrelmail in all our servers, but I was not able to make squirrel works with this settings, maybe my fault.

Squirrelmail and roundcube are probably the two most popular "easy" open source software to set up.

Squirrelmail is ugly as sin, but very stable and works well. Did I mention it is ugly?

Roundcube is sleek and sexy, but newer and still has a few bugs (according to reports -- I have not experienced any myself). It's nice to use, though, and is my current favorite webmail program.

There are many other open source webmail systems -- do a google search and you'll find them. It really depends on what features you require.

Roundcube is a well organized and stable webmail. It is a browser-based multilingual IMAP client with a cool user interface.

:agree:

The problem with roundcube is that it lacks many basic features like filtering that other webmail clients have.

I agree it has the best interface, but it needs to add some basic features beyond retrieve, compose, and send email.

+1 for roundcube!

But I had some troubles/problems with it: sometimes it doesn't syncs the database with the IMAP-Server correctly, so I often thought that there were no new mails. Had/has anybody else this problem and solved it?

A very easy mailer is SquirrelMail, which hasn't the above problem and works great, but I don't like it very much because in my opinion it looks nasty, but it works very well! :)

Roundcube is very good. Its simplicity and speed does wonders.

I'm going to have to vote for roundcube first simply because many of my clients prefer the interface. squirrelmail is ugly and it tends to turn off a number of people in my experience. I have looked at skinning it with one of the nutsmail skins though because it does have some nice plugins and functionality.

WOW, did not know about the skins, thanks! It sure helps with the UGLY skin that comes with it. I may have to choose a mail software for those that do not want RackSpace Email which is what I offer for a premimum.
