View Full Version : How to launch forum
mukesh asho girolla 12-26-2009, 01:02 AM I am looking for complete information on forum. Can any one tell me the stepwise procedure to launch forum. I know the first step is to register domain and then web hosting but i want to know the complete procedure/ information how domain registration happen not where to register. Where the domain data actually maintain because there are many registrar...
That means when we register any domain from registrar what exactly he do. Because i know we don't need to give him any identity prof so what will be the prof to show if someone claim...
I also want to the hosting procedure? What he does? What is the meaning of Cpanel and ftp because i have heard that web hoster gives you the Cpanel link or ftp. I know it;s very boring to read this content but it is very important for me? Please reply as soon as possible...
Deroba 12-26-2009, 01:25 AM 1. Choose between Hosting with free Domain, or Domain and hostimg apart
2. Buy both services from sites like enom, name, godaddy, hosting can be like justhost, hostgator, hostmonster, 1&1, rackspace, junaweb, ezpzhostig, innohosting, godaddy, hosting24 etc etc etc.
3. Setup a FTP account
4. Download and install Filezilla client
5. Download a forum software like mybb, phpbb or smf. Paid would be IPB or vBulletin.
6. Upload the files with FTP
7. Go to your site cPanel and create a Data Base
8. Install the forums from the web installation with the data base details and desired options.
9. Customize your forums, etc.
10. Release to public
mukesh asho girolla 12-26-2009, 01:57 AM Thank for the reply,
Setup a FTP account
Download and install Filezilla client
That means the server hosting is nothing but to running a computer based on Apache server. When you Setup a FTP, that means what exactly you are doing? See apache is software when you run it acts as server, it makes your machine as strong server.
What is the FTP? Are you saying that we need to run ftp in apache? I know FTP is nothing but a a interface which allow use to upload there file to the server, then why we are running it on apache.
Please will clear my BIG doubt?
1]install apache
2]?
3]install forum software but need to where? In apache or in FTP?
4]create a Data Base where to create it in cpanel or in ftp? I know to Create database wee need to install Mysql.
4] then what is the use of cpanel? What is difference between cpanel and ftp access given to the client by the web hoster.
Please clear my Doubt, once again please..
Deroba 12-26-2009, 11:15 AM FTP is a protocol, it has nothing to do with apache
Apache is a webserver, like nginx or lightptd
FTP server is just like Apache, but not to handle HTTP connections, it will handle FTP connections.
From cPanel, a web GUIto control all services in the server, you can create a FTP account with a desired name and password. Also set up a data base from cPanel, with the username, db name and password

The most straightforward procedure is that the registrar or host registers your domain name with the details you provide him at the appropriate registry. So it is in you own best interest to provide correct details.
CanSpace 12-26-2009, 12:44 PM As someone who is obviously somewhat new to all this, I would suggest you find an all-in-one provider. ie. someone who will register the domain for you, host your site, and install the forum software for you. cPanel with fantastico I believe will install phpbb for you.
mukesh asho girolla 12-28-2009, 12:44 AM Thanks for the reply.
Will i get any link or password for accessing my domain. That means if i need to edit my name, address on which i have register my domain what should i do? Will they provide any unique password to login in to domain database like cpanel link give by web hoster.
Deroba 12-28-2009, 12:49 AM If you registered with a domain registrat like godaddy, enom or name, go with them and you should be able to edit DNS, E-Mail, etc.
If your domain was registered by web hoster, go to domain management section, it varies from host to host.
You can ask for support with any.

You may call your webhosting provider to do it for you. They will maintain your data on their NS server.
Please make sure you have complete control about your data (admin/tech. contact, etc.). Some providers will register your domain but under their assignment. This will lead to a difficult situation when someday you decide to move to another provider. I've had this problem before. My provider's reluctant to give over.
suvan 12-29-2009, 09:36 AM Just follow Deroba,it's very easy to create a forum.Just at one place register your domain name, purchase a hosting account, for example at Godaddy. There you can install your forum software like phpbb very easily directly from control panel.
mukesh asho girolla 12-30-2009, 12:35 AM Thank you all members of webhostingtalk, i hope i will get same help in future.. keep answering...
redmeds 12-30-2009, 02:19 AM I disagree with a previous poster. It is not a good practice to purchase your domain through your hosting provider.
You definitely do not want all of your eggs in the same basket.
Go with a notable registrar, and then find the hosting provider that is right for you, especially one that is managed services.
Most forum software comes with a step by step installation, so you should be fine in that area.

GoDaddy is more recognized for being registrar than a web host, so he should do fine with them for both services. It's different when it comes to hosting+domain from hostgator, justhost, bluehost, etc...

If he is going to host a forum, I would stay clear of Godaddy for hosting.
They cram a ton of people on a server for shared hosting.
Limit databases
I have heard nothing good about their hosting.
Good for domains, which is what they specialize in.
Deroba 12-30-2009, 03:36 AM Yes, their hosting might be bad, but is the kind of place where you want to register your domain, unlike having hosting + domain in the previous hosts said, which offer free domain for life.
RossMAN 12-30-2009, 04:00 AM mukesh asho girolla,
First of all welcome to the WHT community, please make yourself at home.
There are 4 steps to successfully launch your forum:
1) Domain. I would recommend using an actual domain registrar which specializes in domain registration and NOT your web host. Here are some domain registration suggestions:
Name.com - offers FREE Whois protection to protect your personal info.
NameCheap.com - offers FREE Whois protection to protect your personal info.
GoDaddy.com
2) Web hosting. I would recommend using an actual web host and NOT your domain registrar. Yes GoDaddy and NameCheap offer web hosting and it might make sense to do both with the same company. Choosing a web host company isn't quick or easy because there are thousands of web hosts out there. If your forum is important to you, looking for a web host with a good reputation, has been in business for at least 2 years and doesn't offer super low prices. Reliable web hosting starts around $5/mo depending on how much disk space/bandwidth you expect you'll need. It's best to start out with a small package and you can upgrade later if your forum grows.
3) Install forum software. You can choose between paid (vBulletin (http://www.vbulletin.com/) or IP Board (http://www.invisionpower.com/products/board/)) or free (SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org/), MyBB (http://www.mybboard.net/) or phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com/)). If you find a web host which offers a control panel and script installer, you DO NOT have to worry about logging in to FTP, manually creating MySQL databases, changing permissions, or any of that. What is this software called? Look for "cPanel with Fantastico" or "DirectAdmin with Installatron".
Here's how you install a forum in under 1 minute:
Login to your cPanel or DirectAdmin control panel
Select Fantastico or Installatron
Select forum script, click install, enter admin username, password, e-mail address and finish installation.
You're done and your forums are installed.
4) Marketing and advertising your forums. This is the hardest part, letting the world know about your forums. Good luck!

A few questions/suggestions for you:
Register your domain with Name.com or NameCheap.com
Find (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4) a real web host (not GoDaddy) then search (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/search.php) for reviews.
If you need web host suggestions or recommendations, please post your budget. How much are you comfortable paying?

I hope this helps, please let us know if you have any questions :D
jbl33 12-30-2009, 03:57 PM Be very careful with spammers. Forum softwares are typically a target for spammers who are looking to take them over for other purposes.
