View Full Version : Starting Reseller Host
Castrum 12-25-2009, 10:08 PM Well currently I am with JustHost for my normal domain hosting. However, I am looking into setting up a reseller. I heard JustHost is horrible for reselling so I might go with Host Gator. I want to start small with the Aluminum package. You get 50GB Disk Space, 500GB Bandwidth, and unlimited domains for a decent price. I was wondering since I am starting small how many clients do you think I can have? I am unsure how much disk space and bandwidth I should offer to stay within my reseller package limits.
njoker555 12-25-2009, 10:18 PM Just know that HG doesn't allow overselling on their reseller packages. So you can only promise people what they give you. As for the number of clients, you would have to look at your set up and packages. With hostgator you should be able to answer the question easily once you set up your packages.
There are other options for you, just look around, you may end up saving money and it's ok to oversell in a reseller environment (assuming you don't overdo it by offering billions of gigabytes of space), any one of them would be good.
Castrum 12-25-2009, 10:34 PM I have been brainstorming some plans and came up with the following.
Gold Plan
1,000 MB - Disk Space
10,000 MB - Bandwidth
Platinum
5,000 MB - Disk Space
15,000 MB Bandwidth
Diamond
15,000 MB - Disk Space
50,000 MB - Bandwidth
Do you think these plans would be good to start off with?
Arber 12-25-2009, 10:47 PM best way to start is with a vps its great cause its flexible you get root access and its easy to switch to dedicated server .
Castrum 12-25-2009, 11:01 PM How hard is it to run a VPS? Is it any harder then a reseller? I pretty much have my eyes set on a reseller because I haven't looked into VPS that much. I want to start off just local selling hosting to local businesses and such.

yeah, a bit harder, you have to know a bit of SSH but if you get a managed service, your host should be able to help you. If you're not ready then just stick with your original plans of reseller, It's just as good to start up with. A VPS gives you more branding options and you have a lot of control but it's more work.
And your plans above are decent, hopefully you can price them properly as well.
Good luck.

Its a bit harder. But if you get a vps get a managed one you can get a good one for around 60-70$ with cpanel & fully managed

Pricing seems to be the hard part. I want my hosting business to stay more local. Do you think I can raise the price a bit more because I am concentrating on a local niche market. I was thinking Gold Plan 7.95/month, Platinum 14.95/month, and Diamond 19.95/month. Do you guys agree with the prices? Should I raise or lower?
njoker555 12-25-2009, 11:19 PM your gold and and platinum plans seem more expensive compared to the diamond plan. Try to keep the ratio the same.
For example, your first plan gives 1gb space for $8 then the second one gives 5gb space for $15. Ratio goes from 1:8 to 1:5 then with diamond it's 3:4
ariyes 12-26-2009, 01:40 PM I think if you take Hosting from HG then make Small packages. that will be better for you. Coz the space is limited and you cant sell many hosting in the initial stage. you can make package like 1GB,2GB,3GB.
better you sit back and calculate again how much you want to earn per month and within how many months. then make a suitable package.
HostXNow 12-26-2009, 03:52 PM Many hosts offer cheaper prices on plans that have more diskspace/bandwidth like save 1% on Gold, 3% on Platinum and 5% on Diamond for example.
It's possible to offer cheaper prices on larger plans without having to oversell.
DominicQuick 12-26-2009, 03:55 PM Stick with a reseller plan. VPS's are quite unstable and more expensive. Reseller Hosting is easier and your host will more than likely help you with setting up accounts.
If you need billing software WHMCS is the way to go as that allows cpanel plans to be setup instantly. VPS modules on the other hand can take a whilst to manually assign.

Thanks, I will stick to reseller for now.

VPS' aren't unstable if you know how to manage one. They could have the same amount of stability or even more stability than a reseller account depending on what you do on it. But generally they are more expensive for the same specs.
And what do you mean VPS modules can take a while to manually assign? I assume you would just sell shared/reseller hosting with VPS, it'll work the same way as a regular reseller account - instant and automatic setups. Don't think the OP mentioned anywhere about creating and selling VPS, that's on a completely different level.
Ryan - HostATree 12-26-2009, 09:51 PM All I can say is that I suggest you go with a more personal host that you can work with 1 on 1 better. Larger hosts tend to run everything off polices and sla's and cannot cut you good deals reselling for them. Just talk around, ask different hosts about what you are trying to do and see which one is most accommodating.

I would go with a more personal host but they tend to be a bit more pricey. I guess I can look around and see what deals I can get.
njoker555 12-26-2009, 10:35 PM What hosts have you been looking at so far? And I doubt the price differs too greatly, I would think they were the same or at least worth the price because of all the help you can get.
Castrum 12-27-2009, 03:54 PM I am trying to develop a plan before I even start purchasing a reseller. I just want to make sure if I am making the right choices. I am already gearing towards HostGator because they offer free WHM/cPanel and their overall reliability. I am going to start small and purchase their Aluminum package which offers 50GB disk space and 500GB bandwidth. I plan on creating a local shared hosting business that will focus on more local customers. I've been doing some research and there is only a few local shared hosting businesses. Based on what they offer and their prices I think I can pull off some competitive prices. I want to know what you guys think about these packages.
Package 1
100mb - Disk Space
5gb - Bandwidth
$5/per month
Package 2
200mb - Disk Space
10gb - Bandwidth
$15/per month
Package 3
750mb - Disk Space
25gb - Bandwidth
$25/per month
Package 4
1gb - Disk Space
35gb - Bandwidth
$35/per month
Package 5
2 gb - Disk SPace
45gb - Bandwidth
$60/ Per Month
njoker555 12-27-2009, 03:58 PM your plans show you're not overselling but those are very expensive packages. For $60/mo, you can get a pretty decent VPS.
The space bandwidth ratio is good, although you could increase the space a little bit, but the price ratio compared to what they get is too expensive imo. 10 years ago, you probably would have had a great plan, but technology greatly increased in efficiency and quality over the years, make sure you keep up with it.
Look around current hosting company packages and see how they price it, just to get an idea of what you should be doing.
Good luck.

To be honest its really expensive. Space & Bandwidth isnt that expensive these days. For 25$/month I can get a decent vps with 30gb space & 500GB bandwidth. Alot of non over sold resellers over like 30gb space and 200gb bandwidth for 10$/month
Package 1
500MB - Disk Space
50GB - Bandwidth
$5/per month
Package 2
1000MB - Disk Space
100gb - Bandwidth
$10/per month
Package 3
2500MB - Disk Space
250GB - Bandwidth
$20/per month
are an example of more modern day plans. Package three will earn you around 15-16$ profit. I would suggest you get a vps though or a dedi from a good company

Thanks for the response now that I look at those prices they are much more reasonable. I also have another question do I offer anytime money back guarantee or like 7-day money back guarantee. I've seen web host offer both options I was wondering which one I should consider.
