View Full Version : Spammers?
XelionOne 12-24-2009, 07:33 AM Hi.
I am just curious... Are any other companies on here getting many customers paying for the web hosting, yet either ignoring the TOS or never replying to the emails you send them?
I have a few people who have signed up over the last 3 weeks, everything seems to be completely fine, the address they give is real and in full, the name seems reasonable for whichever country they are from, they pay the bills, they don't seem to do anything wrong - however the domain never resolves to the server, when you communicate to them, they do not respond, there seems to be "silent" emails being sent from the account yet without any domain name - so you suspend their account and ask them to explain (kindly) what they intend to use the hosting for, also send them a link to the TOS which states clearly that a domain must be used with the hosting, and that we do not allow spamming of any kind... They still do not respond.
Some of those customers IPs are based in the same location they state in the sign up form. Some aren't even close.... The emails seem to go through to both the paypal AND the signup email, but no response...?
I consider that they are spammers, and are breaching our TOS which is why after 24hours of no communication the accounts are removed from the server but the client details remains, just in case they do respond and explain their use....? So far... None of them have responded despite stating that we were willing to refund the money as we close the account!!
So I am confused... Why would anyone signup, pay money, within minutes send emails - minutes later being suspended. Within 15minutes of signup, you try to contact them and NO RESPONSE!! Offer money back and still nothing!?!? Then you wait 24hours delete their account - and still nothing??
We have several policies in place to limit fraud including using Maxmind, and also using our staff resources to research each customers signing up, to ensure the quality of hosting to our other clients?
Any Ideas?
Thanks.
alex

Hey that's an extra $3.99 in your pocket!
zomex 12-24-2009, 11:45 AM We get this a lot. Sometimes the domain they use isn't even registered. It confuses me too but as coreymanshack said the money from the first month can add up.
dean1012 12-27-2009, 01:42 AM We have unfortunately had one of these too.
Maxmind classified as low risk. I saw nothing out of the ordinary and their PayPal was verified.
Approximately 15 days after they ordered service, I noticed they did not have their domain pointing to our servers and nothing was uploaded so I e-mailed them a courtesy message instructing them how to utilize our service.
Within 24 hours of the e-mail I sent them, they quickly uploaded a spam script and began sending spam as quickly as possible. Of course, I caught it and shut them down (thankfully we were not listed on a blacklist).
I would be very very weary of anyone who does not point to your nameservers within 15-30 days.
woods01 12-27-2009, 02:18 AM We had one of these on a dedicated recently. It's rare, we cut the client off as soon as it started since I did speak to them and they told me they wouldn't be doing any mailing.
They did get our usual warnings prior to being disconnected however after no response was provided that was the end of that. We usually grant more of a benefit for clients that tell us they are mailing but this one in particular said he was not.
Disconnected him after a few days service, never heard from since.
I think it's starting to really get desperate for those that are knowingly signing up to spam. We've had clients recently self-terminate after being listed on spamhaus's rosko list.
M Bacon 12-27-2009, 03:06 AM I had a spammer sign up and I was notified from the datacenter that he does major damage. I told him about it and never heard from him since and even kept the money without him filing a paypal dispute. He ordered no control panel and passed the fraud checks and ordered quite a few IP Addresses.
I hate clients that sign up for my services and do not open a ticket to ask for help. The client just leaves without asking for help. The client may ask for help once and then when our team fixes the issue or attempts to fix the issue then the client leaves.
I just wish that more clients would notify me if they have "issues" so that our team can take care of them.

We actually see alot of orders like this. Customers complete the checkout process yet we can never seem to get ahold of them. We try to usually call, e-mail etc... (after our fraud checks) and sometimes the customer just never responds. Depending on the service sometimes we will just refund it and not fulfill the order or if it's a smaller ticket item simply provide the service and if they opt not to use it that's their choice.
We get a number of calls a day so we do try to match incoming calls with client phone numbers since it wouldn't surprise me if the emails we send perhaps end up as spam.
Usually the larger ip customers will follow-up though, they need somewhere to go:)
we also get these kind of orders regulary, you need to strict with regard to Spammers, do not refund to spammers.
They want to test the server vulnerabilities by signing up with a minimum package and after their test is successful, they start doing their job and screw the server.
