It seems to me that alot of people don't like to or don't want to use cogent bandwidth. One of my friends thinks it seems to be ok as he pings well to them. Could someone enlighten me ?

Hi,

Normally, packets find the fastest and shortest route to the site your trying to reach. With cogent this is not so. The basic problem with cogent is that the route you take to reach a website is fixed. This may lead to bandwidth maxing out and slow response times from websites since the number of machines your packets go through are a lot more then what you would go through normally in some cases.

what do you mean by "cogent" bandwidth? is it a brand?
also what is "nap" bandwidth?
and why would different bandwidths differ?

Hi,
yes, cogent is a brand name if you may.. its the name of the company that provides that particular type connectivity.

NAP bandwidth is basically bandwidth that comes directly from the main internet backbones and not through some reseller. Example, getting bandwidth from UUNET directly would be NAP bandwidth.

Bandwidth differ because of who your getting it from.. if your getting it directly from the backbone, it would be higher quality bandwidth because you would get better speeds and reliability.

do a search for cogent, there's been countless discussions on it's quality.

you'll notice a pretty split consensus on cogent.

there's mixed views on it's quality. Generally, I think when it comes to hosting just normal sites, it should be ok even if the peering is less than optimised. Most users probably won't notice the difference. Ping may not be ideal so game servers is probably not as suitable. Other than that, you can still squeeze some great value out of cogent lines.

I noticed ic2net.net has come up quite a bit after doing some research on some hosts. Is this a backbone provider for some major datacenter somewhere in NE USA? How would we know what tier level these providers are at?
