I hope they do not completely stop making personal computer processors or Intel processors will sky rocket without competition :bawling:

Thats bad news... I wonder if Intel will gain the Monopoly again. :(

Hmm...

Where in the article does it say they won't be making processors for "micro-computers" anymore?

They are just going to stop competiting with Intel in the 32-bit, who-can-make-the-fastest-clock-speed market.

As you may know, they are putting a lot of work into their 64-bit cpu, which, in my opinion, is LONG overdue for mainstream PC hardware, it's been around for over a decade (64-bit cpus), it's about time.

I'll take their announcement as a sign of their commitment to having that become a reality... and hopefully their stock takes a nose dive so I can pick up a few hundred shares for cheap.

It'll be a good thing in the end... It's my firm belief that AMD is trying to get ahead of Intel by a long-stretch by making these business plans (see my previous post about the clock speed war).

The current cpus do have a shelf-life, meaning they can only use the currents specs to get X Ghz -- it's a battle that's going to end with no victor, and seeing as how the current cpus available are in the 2Ghz range, they run applications and games very, very fast.... anything over 1.5Ghz for a desktop computer is just overkill and they realize this.

Clockwork is right, it doesn't actually say they're going to stop making desktop processors. I see it as a sign that they're going to diversify, with the new 64-bit chips (for servers initally then desktops, although apparently they've got a 32-bit and 64-bit compatible motherboard already) plus we'll hopefully see low-power chips (like transmeta makes) for tablet PCs.

AMD is not leaving the desktop market they are only expanding their product line. One of the big things they are doing now is working on a agreement with Apple to start making processors for them.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling, guess it helps to read the article for what it really says eh? roflmao
