I was reinstalling my Norton Antivirus, and it popped out of the blue, via the Windows XP messenger service. It's the new type of spam that exploits the service and pops up a message out of nowhere.

This will get rid of that problem. ;) Or, from the command prompt type net stop messenger Acroplex 11-24-2002, 02:26 AM Thanks, that was successful ! :D AmericanD 11-24-2002, 02:32 AM What msn do u use on Linux ? i use that tcl/tk based.. forgot the name okihost 11-24-2002, 06:35 AM I get messenger SPAM on a weekly basis from WHR.. Thanks guys :wavey: tagalaxy.net 11-24-2002, 06:40 AM MGCJerry - Ah, thanks! HingyGuy 11-24-2002, 11:10 AM Ok, this is a relative new spamming technique. The guy behind it is well know in the spamming and anti-spamming circles (No name here as there could be legal implications). Needless to say he just upgraded his hardware operations and got new people to work on the spam for him. Without getting into that any further, there are two ways of disabling this problem. 1) Turn of windows messaging. control pane->services->messanger-> stop service 2) If however you can not turn off your messaging, (ie: You need those kinky messages from your secretary) invest in a simple firewalll and disable ports 131, 139 and 135 .... or bettery yet set up your firewall to reject everything except for what you allow. Be carefull as if you do not know what you doing you can block genuine IP transmissions. Here are a few sites to look at: About the SPAM: http://www.practical-tech.com/infrastructure/i11042002.htm http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/FaqWiki/shownode.php?id=853&sortby=rating About Windows Messanger: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q168893 And if anybody finds mr R***** ******** I hope they hang him by his testicles in the square. interactive 11-24-2002, 11:14 AM In theoryu it wouldn't be hard at all with a simple script to spam a couple thousand people in 10-30 seconds. Darth 11-24-2002, 11:29 AM I get that all the time :( Vex 11-24-2002, 12:54 PM Yep, I get those atleast 3 times a day. Very annoying! Acroplex 11-24-2002, 02:59 PM In theory, wouldn't that qualify as port scanning? Angel78 11-24-2002, 05:47 PM still havent got one of those :) The Dude 11-24-2002, 07:01 PM If you have a firewall running, you most likely wont get that crap..I havent seen any oif it since it started, and i hope i dont!!! The Dude  Tropical Tundra 11-24-2002, 07:27 PM Does stopping net messenger affect IM? The good thing about a free market is you can go to another company if you don't like the one you're on. Problem is, it doesn't work too well with the Internet, but you can still quit visiting sites that have ads on them. :( Tropical Tundra 11-26-2002, 02:31 AM Originally posted by The Dude* What gives them the rightt o do this????????
