Hello,

I have a domain with custom nameservers. I'm wondering if I'll lose these nameservers during the transfer and I'll have to recreate them with the new registrar which will cause downtime.

Please advise. Thanks.

If your nameservers are currently a part of your domain registration package then you will lose them. If your nameservers are hosted with another provider or in a separate area with the current place you shouldn't lose them.

Traditionally when you transfer domains whatever nameservers you have set will transfer to the new place however those nameservers will still need to be functional.

If you're talking about "registered" nameservers... ie ns1.yourdomain.com, then they should just transfer over once the gaining registrar completes the transfer.

Once the gaining registrar gets the domain (once you confirm the transfer) you'll be able to check their control panel and see the nameserver settings even before propagation happens, so you'll know if anything isn't set up correctly.

There's no reason why there should be any downtime.

yup, that's true. Hosting nameservers will be transferred over, no downtime is expected. If you use your registrar's dns, everything will be lost.

Thanks for your inputs but I'm confused. What do you mean by registrar's DNS? I have a VPS in a different datacenter configured to use ns1.mydomain.com & ns2.mydomain.com, where mydomain.com is the domain to be transferred.

Will I have to recreate the nameservers?

To unconfuse you, the short answer is no, you will not have to recreate your nameservers.

By the registrar's dns, they mean it's a parked domain, and you haven't registered it. For example, the registrar nameserver for say, name.com would be ns1.name.com.

If you've already registered your nameservers, and they're pointing to your site, you're good to go, and they will transfer with the domain.

I did some transfers from GoDaddy to ResellerClub in the past,
And I don't believe any child name servers were lost. :)

I am 100% sure that the Child Name Servers are not lost with a registrar transfer. I have done it my self and checked just 2 weeks ago.

again any child.mydomain.com will have the same IP before and after the transfer

Hope this helps
