View Full Version : overselling with hostgator ?
manhal 12-20-2009, 02:18 PM Hi,
It is known that hostgator does not allow overselling with their reseller server packages, but I really want to offer the unlimited plans for my clients so I was wondering if there is ANY way to make it work without switching to their vps/dedicated servers.
Ps: please note that I know, in reality, unlimited plans are not exist but what can I do if that's what made my customers happy!!.
Thank you .
vivithemage 12-20-2009, 02:21 PM Reality is, you're restricted to what you're allocated. No way around it, sorry.
You'd have to go to another host.

I hope you have a pretty good TOS set up to offer that.
And I highly doubt HG will be lenient with that rule for one client.
manhal 12-20-2009, 03:21 PM But they do oversell themselves by offering unlimited packages, right? also this is not for 1 client but rather for a public package I want to create through my HG reseller package.
njoker555 12-20-2009, 03:23 PM Yes they offer it, but they have a good TOS set up and probably have a pretty good legal team to back things up when they need it.
Bihira 12-20-2009, 03:49 PM Yea, don't think they will allow overselling on thier reseller plans; probably will need to find a host that does allow it.
WireNine 12-20-2009, 03:55 PM Overselling on their reseller packages isn't allowed, and there is no way around it. You would only be able to do it on a VPS.
MikeDVB 12-20-2009, 04:03 PM Your only option would be to find another reseller plan at another provider that allows overselling or going to a VPS/Dedicated where you have full control.
cpoalmighty 12-20-2009, 06:43 PM You can oversell with a hostgator reseller account period. Full stop and that is the end of it. You should really look for another host
ItsJustHosting 12-20-2009, 07:28 PM Unlimited plans usually lead to a few people thinking they can actually use unlimited, which will eat up resources and drive up server load, which in turn will slow everything down and NOT make your clients happy, including the ones who cause the problem.
JixHost 12-21-2009, 12:22 AM Its almost impossable to enable that on one reseller account of many on the server, add to that they made a decision to not enable that company wide..

My little experience shows that average unlimited users do not exceed the limit of 5 GB space / 50 GB bandwidth which is still fine (please correct me if I am wrong), however in rear cases, you may get a user that wants even more than this limit, here you can always ask him to switch to a vps/dedicated package or simply suspend his account due to too much usage of resources (according to the TOS).

That's the thing. What resources will you put in the suspension notice? If you are promising unlimited space and you tell him he used up 50gb of space then you'd end up getting in trouble.
That's what I was saying about HG's TOS. They covered almost everything they have to so they don't face any legal issues. That's the thing you have to worry about most.
And from my experience, you're likely to see more than rare occasions of people thinking they can use up unlimited space and bandwidth.
manhal 12-21-2009, 02:28 AM That is correct, we need to have a detailed TOS to avoid any legal confusions.
Radejr 12-21-2009, 08:40 AM hostgator I'm pretty sure has 24/7 support you can ask them any question you have. I am sure they will be happy to answer for you.
manhal 12-21-2009, 08:49 AM I have just asked hostgator support and they said NO for overselling.
Well, even though I am very happy with their service but just because of this I may consider a move to another host, any recommendation ?
