I saw several couriertcpd on my vps...

Just google it and know it's a mail sever.

I want to know it's for sending email or receiving email or both?

why I need it? as far as I know sendmail is a good software and most linux install it by default....why we need it instead of sendmail...what's the difference between them.

Thank you very much.

it is an imap/pop3 program,
it is normal that a few courier programs run on your server,

without it, you will be unable to connect your mailserver with pop3/imap.

many webmails includeing squirrelmail uses imap to connect to mailserver, so courier is needed.
ehcp also uses courier programs for pop3/imap access.

see you,

Thanks...it's a pop3/imap mail server or client?

if it's pop3/imap mail server...I do not want my vps have this function...because it's only a web server, NOT mail sever. I only need my web sever can send out emails, but it's not necessary to let other mail client link to my sever.

So I can remove it?

yes, then, you can remove it.

they are used only if your server is a mail server.
