meetbeta 12-15-2009, 08:40 PM Hi all,
I am currently having 50 clients web sites in different servers. I am planning to put all the client in my own server.
Most of the client web sites are flash based,i am planning to increase the clients also...
For this purpose
please guide me
Hardware details - which processor, Ram capacity,
broadband - In uk which line is suitable
what are the open source/ not expensive softwares,
i need to run mail server also, is it ok to run web and mail in single server ?
please help me
Thanks
protecweb 12-15-2009, 09:07 PM Running your own server from home is a very bad idea. Most home broadband ISPs do not allow you to use their broadband for commercial hosting anyway.
You should be looking at getting a reseller account or maybe a VPS if your confident you can run your own servers efficiently and securely.
Hope that helps.

Don't start a web hosting company, you clearly have not researched into this at all. You'll only end up losing money and letting down clients.
jrianto 12-15-2009, 09:58 PM If you are making a good monthly income off these 50 clients, I would suggest getting a dedicated server. I used rapidswitch and would recommend them to you.
I don't think running the server off your own place is a good idea, it would be much better if you buy a server and collocate them with a provider near your place.
DATARTIM 12-15-2009, 11:30 PM Firstly you need to do some reasearch and really make sure you have the time and money.
However you already appear to have 50 sites/clients which could be a good start.
Do not host anything at home on residential bb lines.
I'd suggest looking into a fully managed dedicated server, perhaps with a control panel such as cPanel.
That way you don't have to think about keeping things secure/managing the server and can focus on support your clients and getting more.
HH - Josh 12-16-2009, 05:11 AM Do you want to own your server or rent it like a VPS?
Tristan Perry 12-16-2009, 05:50 AM I'd research a little more first, as mentioned above. Before thinking about starting up a host, you should know basic things like hardware set-up, OS type, web server, etc.
Also, if you don't plan to hire a system administrator then you'll need to be well versed in this too (including updates/patches, security, etc)
Personally, though, I'd suggest that you go for a very fully managed server package (or a fully managed VPS), get WHM/cPanel and use that.
It sounds like you are thinking about buying a server and hosting it at home (from your post) - this would be a recipe for disaster.
ldcdc 12-16-2009, 06:50 AM Go for a reseller account. It'll minimize your costs and your server related management overhead, enabling you to be in business in a very short time.
Like the others have said, hosting from home is a no-no for a lot of reasons, and will put you at a competitive disadvantage.
Now, if these customers are using a lot in terms of space etc., a high end VPS or a dedicated server would be a solution. From the sound of it, you seem to need the fully managed variant of those.
i need to run mail server also, is it ok to run web and mail in single server ?
It's a very common configuration, nothing wrong with it.
Hydro_Host 12-16-2009, 09:09 AM I would research a little more. I don't think it is the best idea to start a web hosting company based on your original post, but I will try answer some of your questions.
Don't run any mail/web servers from your home, especially not on a residential connection. There are many reasons for this.
There is no problems with running mail and web servers on a single machine.
I would think about getting a Dedicated server or VPS. There are many providers. Opt for cpanel, probably.
I'd suggest get yourself a reseller account from innohosting or the primehost. Excellent hosts that also offer free billing and free end user support.
meetbeta 12-16-2009, 08:31 PM Thank you for your valuable comments, you guys are great.
all your comments and some other reading i have finally decided to keep my server in nearest colocation. Dedicated server is too expensive. For this setup i am planning to put some vps and rent it for my clients.
I hope you all accept my idea,(waiting for your comments please)
for some websites and between 10-15 vps
can you please recommend a processor , ram , hdd capacity for initial stage.
i am thinking about supermicro caseing, motherboard+ intel xeon 5520+4gb ram+ 3tB hdd
