I was always under the impression that we can find the main host provider for a reseller website by using whois and looking at name-servers, but apparently I was not correct as I tried to find who is the main host provider for

hostwoot.com

but I couldn't find it with whois?

Is there any way to find this information out online or using some tools/commands?

You can run a trace-route and see where the hops go to and from to sometimes find out the main host.

It's not always clear though if the final couple of hops don't mention a server provider directly (in this case the hops go to ovh.net -> chtix.eu -> server.bibi77.info which doesn't seem too clear)

(An example of a clear trace-route would be trace-routing this site, which shows "rackspace.com" in the traces, etc)

But yeah, looking up the WHOIS can help identify the host of a website in a shared hosting environment, and a trace route (via command line or http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/traceroute/) may help to identify the server provider of a website in a dedicated environment - as a general rule.

It would thus appear that they're using a VPS or dedicated server from http://www.ovh.com

Easiest method is to just ask them. You'll get the most reliable answer that way, then again you could end up with a complete lie. But as Dan pointed out they could have a server at OVH, just ask them and see what their story is and compare.

They have two VPS's.
