View Full Version : Which is the best and most recommended Shopping Cart?
Ryan - GMX 12-13-2009, 08:22 PM I have been looking and trying out different shopping carts. I have read up some of the posts in here but I dont know which is the best. I have recently installed osCommerce but some of the addons require php editing.
Just to give an idea, I am setting up a repair shop that will also sell parts. I need a cart that is easy to customize, has alot of addons, and easy to manage.
The ones I have looked at as a free standard
osCommerce
Zen-Cart
Magento
Quick Cart
OpenCart
Which of these are the best to go with for the ease of customizing and managing.
dynamicnet 12-14-2009, 03:43 PM Greetings:
Our customers who have tried various carts, typically tell us they prefer ShopSite over the open source carts.
Thank you.
If you are looking for something powerful but heavy, you should go with Magento Commerce. :agree:
If you are just looking for something light and simple, go with PrestaShop. :agree:

Hi, Ryan - GMX
From my own experiences, I would like to recommend zen-cart. It is powerful and flexible enough in building almost any size of e-commerce sites. Best of all, it is timely updated and security enough for e-commerce. Of course, there are still many add-ons to help you in marketing, managing and seoing purpose. :)
Have a nice day,
nelsonkist 12-16-2009, 04:47 AM I came across ZenCart awhile back while still hosting with dream host.Eventually I used it for my first eCommerce project because it was open source, and dreamhost recommended it.
fancypocket 12-16-2009, 09:50 AM You may want to consider cs-cart and x-cart for paid cart.
Muttek 12-16-2009, 10:15 AM If you are looking for something powerful but heavy, you should go with Magento Commerce. :agree:

Well said. I agree.

When you are considering what to reply to for the list, do you look at PCI compliance, speed of operation, reliability, ease of upgrades, number of security vulnerabilities reported per year, as well as security?
From a security and server administrator, I can only speak good about ShopSite. ShopSite is PCI Compliant. ShopSite is compiled, and runs very fast. We've been using ShopSite for over a decade without a single reliability issue. Upgrading ShopSite takes less than five (5) minutes. Since 1998 there has been zero (0) security vulnerabilities reported.
Since ShopSite does not rely on PHP, mySQL, etc. security issues are close to non existent.
Thank you.
e-Sensibility 12-16-2009, 04:25 PM I recommend ubercart
CardSolve 12-16-2009, 06:19 PM You might want to test pre-compatibility with your payment gateway so that no additional customization or knowledge of programming will be necessary.

What do you mean it doesn't rely on php, mysql etc.? How is it coded? Pure html, database...can you explain a bit please?
What about resources used by shopsite compared to zen-cart, opencart, ubercart and prestashop or any of them?
I am quite new in ecommerce
Thank you
dynamicnet 12-17-2009, 05:03 PM Greetings:
ShopSite is compiled; visit http://shopsite.com/ for more information.
From our experience ShopSite runs faster then ZenCart, oscommerce, etc.
Thank you.
gregm11 12-17-2009, 11:36 PM oscommerce and miva are two I always recommend. I think people have less issues with oscommerce. Just make sure you create a routine to backup all your database and config files.
unity100 12-18-2009, 03:20 PM oscommerce. if not, zencart, which is modified oscommerce.
PingVPS 12-20-2009, 05:02 AM Magento is our person favourite for clients right now, however on more than one occasion, updates have broken elements of some stores ranging from complete failure to access the homepage to google checkout failing.
That said Magento is still a great piece of kit and very powerful.
Make sure your hosting is compatible too.
We have used x-cart many times, also very good and easy to work with on the SMARTY templating system.
Oscommerce also very good, but takes more work to get exactly what you need from it. Lots of playing with code if you want to make it stand out from other osc sites.
coolvserver 12-20-2009, 03:55 PM If you tried osCommerce, you can stick with it.
There are many osCommerce hosting providers there, you should be able to find someone to do the php editing for you.
You can also hire a osCommerce consultance to do the editing for you.
rotame 12-20-2009, 04:18 PM I choose zen-cart is very friendly and have many addons already enable on it
virtualghost 12-21-2009, 09:04 AM Anyone has used or update on Inspire Shopping Cart, its paid one but its performance etc ??
nos879 12-22-2009, 08:26 PM I agree with JLHC, Prestashop and Magneto are good choices.
Prestashop is easy to use, free, and design is ok. There is no required knowledge of php, unless you want some hardcore personal settings.
Magneto, pretty interface, costs money, and very nice design.
But most of all you want to make sure these shopping carts support your payment gateway like 2Checkout, Paypal, Authorize.net
unity100 12-23-2009, 07:57 AM you should never put 'pretty interface' over community support, 3rd party provider recognition, modification abundance, modification costs and expandability.
any ecommerce cart's interface can be made pretty by spending some amount of effort and design budget. however no single individual or small business will be able to make up for the above deficiencies with any kind of budget, if they exist in a cart.

Do you plan to use free shopping cart or fee based?
What services you will need: development, design, upgrade?
What about hosted shopping cart solutions?
handsonwebhosting 12-23-2009, 08:58 PM Anyone has used or update on Inspire Shopping Cart, its paid one but its performance etc ??
I've installed a couple of carts with Interspire and it's a great product but it has a few quirks in the versions that I tested (about 6 months ago) which I just couldn't deal with. Things like editing products, variants or customer details - the software just didn't want to do it. Pagination is a HUGE issue. There's more than 400 products in the store and it wants them all on ONE page when you go into edit mode. This is enough to cause database problems alone, but there was no SORTING or SEARCH available in the software to find the product that you wanted to edit. What a nightmare. Ever try to sell t-shirts and you are no longer offering a certain color and want it removed from the variants? Can't do it! You have to delete the entire variants, re-add them all and then assign it back to the product (or multiple products as the case may be).
HOPEFULLY that has all changed in later versions, but for the price, I was not a happy camper!
X-Cart I have a number of stores operating this software and I like it. We actually host more than 1000 X-Cart shops in our network, but really the product stands above the crowd.
CRELoaded looks interesting and I think it will give many carts a run for their money.
Magento is popular, and free. That's the most attractive part of it for many people. Personally, I found I could skin and modify the stores to not look like stores with X-Cart easier than I could in Magento. No idea on their Enterprise Version (almost $10k).
unity100 12-24-2009, 08:14 AM Creloaded is an improved oscommerce. its good in its own regard, however you may need to do minor modifications to have the mods out there for osc work for creloaded. apart from that its good. though, despite being an oscommerce offshoot, in the last 2 years they have given me the feeling that they are going increasingly a closed source route, despite it is still open.
inspiron 12-24-2009, 09:51 AM I really like oscommerce. I vote for it.
NeadoDesigns 01-07-2010, 04:06 PM Zen-Cart
Zen Cart is a well-known provider of a free shopping cart system. While the administration back-end can be confusing because of the amount of options available, once you get the hang of things, Zen Cart can be an asset to your company because of its feature rich interface.
OsCommerce
Much like Zen Cart, Os Commerce is a feature rich shopping cart that also happens to be free. Released as Open Source software, Os Commerce has a solid community of supporters that help with the creation of plugins and modules, making this a feature rich shopping cart solution as well.
Cube Cart
Cube Cart is another free, yet versatile shopping cart system. Requiring only PHP and access to one MySQL database, the minimal requirements for this shopping cart solution are easily met by most paid web hosting accounts online today.
afam4eva 01-07-2010, 08:17 PM I'd say magento commerce. Thn Zen cart and Oscommerce follows respectively.
sailojion 01-08-2010, 07:14 AM very thankful form a newbie. freelance job means have to give up freedom to me
VicksHost 01-08-2010, 07:47 AM I would say PrestaShop too, it's simple and very powerful !
xerophyte 01-11-2010, 01:24 AM Satchmo http://www.satchmoproject.com/
I prefer OScommerce for the shopping cart functionality
unity100 01-11-2010, 09:29 PM seems a lot of people are misinformed about zencart and oscommerce.
oscommerce is not 'much like' zencart.
zencart is a fork of oscommerce.
despite much of the common modules out there for oscommerce would work without any issues if installed on a zencart store, there are chances that you may need to do modifications to the module to make it work with zencart.
therefore as a result, because zencart cant directly make use of oscommerce's module base, oscommerce is still far ahead in regard to module abundance and community support.
one should choose according to near and distant future of the store :
if the store would necessitate/may make use of uncommon modules in future (anything non fedex, authorize net, usps, ups, 2checkout, paypal, moneybookers etc rather counts as uncommon) one should go with oscommerce.
as an example you may need to use an up and coming payment provider, or a locally known, established shipping provider, or may want to implement a peculiar affiliate scheme etc. or, quirky and uncommon store modifications of any kind etc.
if not, then the ease of use and cleanness of zencart will do more good.
Farrukh 01-13-2010, 06:01 AM Go with Viart, they provide a free version as well.
www.viart.com
Avoid Oscommerce/Zencart and its fork at all costs.
keserhosting 01-13-2010, 06:46 AM Free shopping carts that are very powerful and full of features: for example, OSCommerce and ZenCart.
corrykid 01-13-2010, 03:27 PM I prefer using OSCommerce myself. Very powerful and mod able.
TheEcommPro 02-09-2010, 01:13 PM Gotta put my 2 cents in for Magento again. Great back end & support.

bilalamjad3 02-18-2010, 12:12 AM zen cart and

Mekhu 02-18-2010, 12:22 AM Avoid Oscommerce/Zencart and its fork at all costs.
Care to elaborate?
HarleyDude 02-18-2010, 12:47 PM Big fan of Zen cart. It integrates well, is open source and easy to modify and it's got some great features. And you can get templates all over the place.
