View Full Version : High Availability Mail Server
nrsoftware 11-23-2002, 06:08 AM Hey guys,
Can I get some suggestions on some good mail server software that has load balancing/high availability, regardless of price, OS, etc. other than Microsoft Exchange?
POP3/SMTP a must
IMAP/Web Interface would be nice
What do most of you who run mail servers use?
How do you rate its reliability, resource usage, speed and functionality?
Thanks for all the information you can provide.

POP3/SMTP are a must and some sort of web interface would be nice. Other than that everything else is gravy as far as protocols supported.
ephost 11-25-2002, 11:29 PM Try http://www.ipswitch.com
The product is called IMail, it has a web interface.
Thanks
cloak 11-26-2002, 02:56 PM Imail works well for Windows, we've used it for over 3 years now (almost 4 actually). Works great, hosts thousands of users and never a hitch, uptimes over a year at a time.
Otherwise, i'd suggest qmail/vpopmail for linux. Fast, powerful and scales *very* well. (Currently I have a client who sends out about a million emails daily on it and the machine handles it quite well, low loads and very fast output and input of mails.)
Before anyone gets all huffy about it, he does hundreds of free-for-all pages, and the majority of the emails on the machine come from those, so its all opt-in and double opt-in. The rest are from free email accounts for his clients.
I don't know which is a good web interface yet, I've not found one I'm happy enough with, but if/when i do, I'll let ya know.
Cya,
Cloak
apollo 11-26-2002, 03:04 PM postfix+ courier + imp :) or postfix, cyrus and imp ;)
Netbridge 11-26-2002, 03:07 PM The best mail software is Lotus Domino. Beats the hell out of the rest.
HRBrendan 11-26-2002, 04:31 PM We have a single server setup that handles mail for like 50-75,000 users that uses qmail for smtp with support for cram-md5 and plain smtp auth, qmail-pop3d for pop with apop and plain auth support, courier imap with imap-ssl support, which relays out through 3 relay boxes running exim 4 and 2 more machines for webmail apps and spam checking.

RackMy.com 11-26-2002, 05:16 PM We have used Merak Mail in some large applications and it works really well. It's quick and very, very stable! Configuring it in a cluster is pretty easy too.

Is the Merak clustering built into the software or are you just doing some Advanced Server clustering?
Has anybody had any experience with MailMax 5.0?

Mdaemon no longer seems to be offered by deerfield. They do have another mail server product now, though. http://www.deerfield.com/news/pressbox/VisNetic_MailServer/index.htm/83/
RackMy.com 12-03-2002, 04:35 AM Yep, Deerfield is offering a private label of Merak Mail at a higher cost.
