I just signed up this evening. About half an hour later, I received an e-mail with the IP address and root password of the server and I was in. That's pretty good response time (not as quick as RackShack who has automated setups, but still nice).

They didn't setup the reverse DNS lookup I asked for. Maybe their DNS hasn't refreshed properly yet. I'll wait a few days then ask them about it again (I need it since I will be running a mail server, and some overzealous spam filtering programs reject mail based on the source having no reverse lookup).

They didn't partition the server as I requested, even though their signup page asks me for that information. It's wasn't a big deal, since the drive is 120 GB anyway.

I'll probably post more later as I have more experience with this host.

If you ask that your server be repartioned the way you had requested they will usually do a restore for you for free, or at least that has been the case with other UCG customers :)

Glad to hear everything is going smoothly so far, except of course the partitioning.

Seems like UnitedCOLO is back in the game and they aren't having that many problems anymore.

I believe unitedcolo is a honest company. But they was not prepared for the difference it is to be inn the colo market, and rent out 49$ servers.

If a customer uses his box to spam or DDoS, and it’s a colo box you can confiscate it, sow nobody would dare do it. But if it’s a 49$ a month server the customer has almost nothing to lose. Sow the 49$ servers need considerably more monitoring to prevent unwanted use.

I had a look at a unitedcolo $49 box, it was pretty good :).

United colo is stable now....

They honestly aren't that bad. While there are obviously a few complaints here and there, EVERY company has their own complaints. RackShack doesn't exactly have a clean record but that doesn't mean that they suck. If they were consitantly as horrible as some of the posts make them seem, 9000 people wouldn't depend on them. You really can't complaina bout getting 1000GB (well 2000GB now...still not used to the 1000 in the first place) of quality BGP routed Internap and Hurricane Electric bandwidth and a 2GHZ p4 machine for $199. Top that off with technical support with a response rate of 3-10 minutes and there's really no reason for anybody to b**ch. They list williams and cogent but they're using them only as backups.

They just told me that MRTG for my machine will be available in "a few days", and reverse DNS will be setup within 24 hours.

I guess they don't have their processes automated so well yet.

What about fdc? Are they back in the saddle?

I've had a $49 server with UCG since day 1.
No complaints at all from me at all :D

FDC is a bit off topic but it seems a lot of people are experiencing packet loss but don't take my word for it, that is just what I've been reading ;)

When I requested RDNS, they indicated it would be setup within 24 hours.
After a week or few I noticed it had not been done, so I emailed again, and it was done quickly after that.
I think they missed a few entries as well, but I was not worried about those.

www.unitedcolo.com is down because their DNS is down. If that's the only reason it's down, then it means any IP addresses, as well as any websites that don't rely on unitedcolo's DNS servers will still work.

Seriously - I was impressed with my server. I just hope that this is not another hour long outage.

What I would like to know is why this outages keep happening - every week or so. If it's DoS attacks, how do other networks (like RS) deal with them?

United Colo is down again.
How can I explain this to my customers?
The total down time of this month exceeds five hours.
Some of my customers might be leaving because of this.
I will leave here sooner or later.

I strongly suggest not to choose United Colo.
The price is low, but quality is terrible.
Too many downs and too poor excuse everytime.

Don't choose United Colo.

At the risk of sounding really stupid here - how do I get it so that I do not rely on their DNS? I do not use their nameservers.

I'm a bit confused.

(1) Don't point your domain names to ns*.unitedcolo.net. Use your own nameservers instead (e.g. run bind or djbdns-tinydns on your server).

(2) Don't rely on their name servers for hostname resolution on your server. Use your own DNS cache instead (e.g. run bind or djbdns-dnscache on your server, and point to it in /etc/resolv.conf).

It sounds like some IP blocks at UnitedColo are completely down, though. So anyone on those IP blocks will be down no matter who's hosting their DNS. Anyone not in those IP blocks will be down only if they're relying on UnitedColo's DNS.

I was thinking of getting one of their 2TB/month servers in a few days, it looks like a nice upgrade over 3 RackShack 400GB/month servers.

The last post in this thread was on the 24th, how's uptime been over the last few days?

Do they really throw excuses at everyone or do they have real reasons for downtime?

I also note they do not offer refunds - this is a bit scary. So if there's a stupid amount of downtime we're expected to accept our loses?

Outages really haven't affected me, a server of mine used for games pretty much push/pulls 500/400k/sec 24/7 (don't worry about it with 2000GB/mo). flatlined for about an hour on my MRTG but immediately went right back to normal right after. server was on subnet 66.111.40.*,but another one on 66.111.50.* didn't seem affected though its hard to tell from the graphs due to vertical exaggeration.

MartinH
11-27-2002, 04:27 PM
I think it's worth the $199 + no setup fee to give them a try. No refunds is a little scary through.

But before I do, can anyone provide a download test? A 5-10mb file would be nice.

StevenG
11-27-2002, 08:37 PM
Didn't someone just mention something about 5 hours downtime?

hmm $199 per month for that is pretty expensive ... no? :)

MartinH
11-27-2002, 09:01 PM
Ok, so 5 hours is quite bad. But for 2TB of bandwidth, a 2GHz server and 1GB of ram it is rather good...

...or at least I'm trying to convince myself that as I've just ordered one (about 3 hours ago).

Then again, if downtime turns out to be an extreme joke I'm sure everyone will just issue chargebacks like I most definately would. From what I can tell, UnitedColo appear to be a new(ish) company - every host goes through this sort of thing.

I'll see how it goes. Does anyone know any decent & free server monitoring services? If so, I'll most definately get one running on the server as soon as I get access to it and let you guys have access to the statistics if anyone's interested.

$2.95 for alertra wouldn't make a big dent in the wallet, then you'd know :)

They DO uphold their SLA...some people got major discounts after last month's troubles with people hosting IRC servers causing major network DDoS.

MartinH
11-27-2002, 09:54 PM
Ahh good. I did chuckle when I saw "In the event that our network is inaccessible for more than one hour during any thirty (30) days period, UCG will reimburse a maximum of twenty (20) percent of each customer's monthly account invoice." after seeing this thread and a few others.

Saying that, the bit that they can always throw back at us is: "Network downtime exists when a particular customer is unable to transmit and receive data and UCG records such failure in the UCG trouble ticket system. Network downtime is measured from the time the trouble ticket is opened by a customer to the time the server is once again able to transmit and receive data." - their site is down everytime downtime (I've experienced) occurs, so how are we supposed to issue a trouble ticket during downtime?

Mushrew, how long have you been with them? I hear you hit almost 10mb/sec outgoing with them. If you've been with them for a month, how much monthly bandwidth have you put through them?

mushrew
11-28-2002, 12:07 AM
i've been with them two months. i don't measure my BW since i have so much of it. http://mrtg.unitedcolo.com/Cisco-8A/port19-day.png is a link to one of my servers which runs a couple game servers. been full almost 24/7 for the past 4 days. the record of 9700k/sec isn't on there since it was a small part of the day (wasn't trying to set a speed record or anything.)

edit: link is http://mrtg.unitedcolo.com/Cisco-8A/port19.html

Martin, just email them. The date/time stamps on the email can probably help your case if there's a dispute over the rebates/refunds for any downtime.

Anyway, I do think that they are improving. I may wait a few months and try another month. 99$ is a good price for 500gb. :D

When I was with them, I can hit 10mbit/s 24/7 ... or close to it. So I can safely say I am satisfied with their speeds if it stays the way it is.

That said, the MRTG is really hard to use to accurately know how much bandwidth is used. I like Servint for their precise reporting on that

pmak0
11-28-2002, 12:35 AM
> 99$ is a good price for 500gb.

RackShack.com gives 400 GB for a little more than that much money. 4webspace.com gives 500 GB for that much money, although only on a lowly RaQ server.

However, their really good deal is $199 for 2000 GB. That deal is why I signed up with them.

What was the highest you could burst to according to mrtg?

Yes. I have been using it for several days now.

> What was the highest you could burst to according to mrtg?

I don't know. They haven't provided me with the URL to my MRTG graphs yet. When I download files from it it goes as fast as my DSL line can, though.

mushrew
11-28-2002, 09:48 PM
You'll need to request the MRTG - they won't send you the URL automatically.

Also, they take a couple of days to set up the MRTG.
