Hi, could someone tell me the differences between leasing a dedicated server and becoming a reseller of some hosting company? If I were to be in the web hosting business, I really don't see any differences besides support for customers. I mean, I don't own the servers anyway.

Thanks
Eric

Dedicated server you get the whole thing. Reseller you get a small chunk of the server.

The cost of leasing dedicated servers these days are pretty cheap, I don't understand why people would still want to become a reseller.

Also, if you have a dedicated, many times you have to manage the server yourself. If you're a reseller, your host will do that part for you.

Someone might want to provide services on a "better" class of server than the low-end dedicated box they could afford to lease; someone might want to sell several different types of hosting (unix, Windows, ColdFusion, a couple of different control panels, whatever) and not want to run several different boxes themselves. Or someone might want to resell only a small number of accounts and not want to have to fill a server in order to make a profit.

Of course, some people would ask why anyone would want to get into the hosting business to begin with...

Isn't it better to manage the servers yourself indead of depending on others? If my customers experience technical problems with the servers, I don't have to go through whoever to provide support for my customers... I still don't see the advantages of being a reseller.

Reseller accounts are good for starters. If you don't know alot of about say linux? It would be difficult to manage a server.
