I have been suggested to use charge.com and/or authorize.net .

We use Authorize.Net and love them. They do not provide a complete billing solution... I assume you know this. Many people have asked this question before.

Our rep is Michael Chamberlain and he was very helpful. Don't know if he can help you in the UK, but you could email him to ask.

I agree...

We use Charge.com and Authorize.net as our merchant solutions. Virtual terminal is a bonus. We used to have 2Checkout.com but experienced billing issued with them, as well as customers being rejected for unknown reasons.

Authorize.net/Charge.com virtual terminal also makes out of country purchases easy! Not to forget great attention to security features.

I to would recommend Authorize.net and Charge.com, they are good companies and have been using them since I started without any problems.

If you are in the UK and dont have Incorporation in the US then Authorize.net accounts are pretty hard to come by.

planetpayment.com are the only company to offer authorize.net accounts to international customers (as far as I am aware) and there rates are not too great.

My current business bank in the UK quoted me 1.84% for personal visa and 2.4% for business visa per transaction, and I was quoted 3.35% per transaction from american express. For a gateway I'm looking at a commidea internet gateway solution (you host your own data collection and make transactions from your site using http over the internet under the covers). That avoids what may be unnecessary infrastructure and from being redirected to another site to collect the payment details. The commidea solution is well under a grand in the first year, and the lower transaction rates compared to, e.g. 2checkout, are attractive. Some other vendors offer an API and using more secure encryption than SSL, but whilst still using the intenet. Others will use an ISDN line to either hook direct to your bank or to the payment processor, but costs of those solutions are higher and may well not be suitable. Internet transactions seems the best, although not the only, way to go.

For a solution where people will hold your hand more, there are the likes of secpay, and in fact, one of their plans also comes in at a fairly low price with no per transaction charge. You might start there. To get your merchant account you will need a detailed business plan, cash flow projections, and you may be required to have been in business for at least a year although it's worth talking to the banks to see what their rules are. Not all banks can process multicurrency, and so that is another wrinkle to consider. Some cards may also be more difficult. My bank had never even heard to disover(y?) cards, and one processor I talked to only had a batch system for processing discover cards via the US, and with a realtime link only coming onstream next year.
