View Full Version : Can I oversell disk space & bandwidth?
vitieubao 11-21-2002, 09:17 PM Dear all,
I'm a small reseller with 1G disk space & 15 G bandwidth. Currently I have 13 accounts which use 1000MB disk space & 15G bandwidth. But actually, these 13 account only use 100MB disk space & 2G bandwidth per month.
When I create new account in WHM, It says that I can not create new acount because I don't have enough space & bandwidth. So, my question is does WHM allow reseller oversell disk space & bandwidth ?
Please help me
Lippy 11-21-2002, 09:21 PM Just a thought, you might want to ask the hosting company you have a reseller account with if this is possible. As it might be controlled by them if they allow you to do so.
Jim_UK 11-21-2002, 10:48 PM Yes its down to the host. Some hosts set up your account to allow overselling and some do not.
You host obviously does not.
Geek3 11-21-2002, 10:55 PM Certianly... it's also dangerous for your original host as well, as if you go over (and the host is near its limit) then it can cost the host some serious $$$. So, as a host admin, I highly discourage overselling. I know most hosts do it, but coming from expierience, be very careful... you may be dancing with fire in a few months.
It's all good.. just as long as you keep a monitor on it! :D
vitieubao 11-21-2002, 11:17 PM So, overselling is possible for reseller in WHM. :)
Do I have the rights to ask my host provider to turn on this function? If he deny, do I have the rights to claim?
And I control all accounts carefully, I know which account uses less disk space & less bandwidth.
Thanks so much for your reply. Help me which my new questions
Very best regards,
Jim_UK 11-21-2002, 11:29 PM This is the kind of question you should ask before ordering an account. Of course, you can ask but if they disable the feature it is usually for a reason.
They are certainly not obliged to turn it on because you ask for it enabled but it may be worth a try.

No.
Choppy 11-21-2002, 11:59 PM Over selling in WHM?
Well i guess you are giving the customer or reseller the option to use as much bandwidth and space as they want if you dont tick that option in the Reseller Center to limit to *** and ***
Or is there another way to do it. Im sure i have seen in the Cpanel.net forums that overselling is not possible in a controlled manner.
I could be wrong though, maybe the limit is actually set on the main domain of the reseller account.
Any ideas?
Kind regards
Phillip
intraweb 11-22-2002, 12:49 AM You have to oversell - that is the name of the game. Just have to use common sense.
If you have 1GB, that would mean only 10 accounts at 100MB. But they would use far less. Overselling is common in every business. Flown on a plane lately? It is a law of averages you must figure out.
I am amazed WHM would be set to do that??? Who are you reselling with?
vitieubao 11-22-2002, 02:01 AM After discuss with my host provider, they turn on that function :)
Thank you very much for your opinions.
Very best regards,
Lippy 11-22-2002, 02:21 AM Glad to see it worked out.
gooroo 11-22-2002, 06:54 AM who are you hosting with?
Alex042 11-22-2002, 09:36 AM There can be an extreme to overselling. Say someone has 1000mb and resells 10 500mb accounts when law of averages may say each customer would use 100mb of that 500mb, but maybe those customers actually know how much they need and the avg for that particular account base is say 300mb. Those customers are wanting something they were expecting to have when the reseller may not be able to give it to them. Instead of reselling 500mb accounts, personally, I think this reseller should have resold something a lot closer to what they actually have like 100-150mb accounts instead of trying to offer the most for the best price when they don't have it to offer. Same thing with bandwidth, you shouldn't offer each customer 15GB of bandwidth when the total the reseller has is 15GB. Resellers need to be able to deliver what they offer.
