View Full Version : Wich OS for a GSP ?
nexty 11-24-2009, 06:12 AM Hi there, should be great If I can catch your point about wich os should be better for a stable and reliable GSP ?
I thing Debian should be ok no?
should I need to install any panel to manage my server I mean - do we have a free panel to admin and give acces for other admin on the server ?
thanks for helping!
technichristian 11-24-2009, 06:35 AM I am not sure what a GSP is but if you are asking for a reliable OS for your server, then yes: both Debian as well as Centos are good. If you want a non-linux OS, go with FreeBSD.
As for control panels, it depends on you. Personally, I am a command line guy and as such do not use control panels. However, if you prefer, there are several control panels that you can choose from: Cpanel, DirectAdmin, Ensim,H-Sphere and many others. For free ones, try ISPConfig [http://www.ispconfig.org/] and SysCP [http://www.syscp.org/].
technichristian 11-24-2009, 06:37 AM There is also DTC [http://www.gplhost.com/software-dtc.html] and Webmin [http://www.webmin.com/] as free control panels.
RandomLittleHost 11-24-2009, 06:50 AM I think he means Game Server Provider, my vote for OS goes with CentOS, for a control panel look at http://www.tcadmin.com/
Edit: Just noticed it only supports Windows OS's, still worth a look though
nexty 11-24-2009, 02:20 PM thanks for all your advertice - I will have a look about cpanel and whm but dont know the price for the licence
XFactorServers 11-24-2009, 05:41 PM thanks for all your advertice - I will have a look about cpanel and whm but dont know the price for the licence
CPANEL/WHM aint a game panel :P
GNS_Harrison 11-25-2009, 11:29 AM Basically it really depends on you.
Use window if you have knowledge.
Use linux if you have knowledge.
Use what you like best.
Each OS isn't better than the "other" each has cons and each has pros.
Window best game panel would be TCadmin
Linux has panels like swiftpanel, mintpanel, gamecp, and others.
However I think Linux best one is swiftpanel.
But, TCadmin is the best panel overall but only runs and works on Windows OS unless you can code it up for linux.
Also depending on what games you are looking to provide or host.
such as counter-strike or team fortress 2
window server 2008 with hpet + fps booster you can gain 1000fps 100ticks.
window server 2003 can only reach about 500-600 fps max.
linux you have to build and compile your own custom kernel to reach stable 1000fps.
Linux is the most stable of all 1000fps.
However, like I mention each has pros and cons.
Don't run in to the industry, until you do some research.
Good luck! :D
nexty 11-25-2009, 01:59 PM Thanks GNS - I know for sur linux will be the good one, debian will be mine I think
about the kernel compilation no worry at all - I have already my kernel compiled so would be not a probleme at all ;-)
the hard thing its to catch the customer hehe
kdmitchell 11-25-2009, 02:16 PM If you are looking at starting a GSP (Game Server Provider) you're better off with Windows 2003 or Windows 2008, seeing that the majortity of game's either don't support linux or are widely ran on Windows. That's not to say that you can't use linux, cause you can. but starting off, Windows is your best OS and then branch off from there. You need to figure out what servers you plan on running and if they have a linux client / server. And then you need to look into Game serve control panel such as TCAdmin or Scinterface.
Be wary.... running in the GSP pool is very, very hard. There are tons of GSP's, some good, some bad, some so-so. You need to do some reach and decide if you really want to start a GSP. Best of luck to you.
ms-warren 11-25-2009, 09:24 PM What OS are you most familiar with? Also if you stick to Linux I would suggest maybe a panel such as swiftpanel: http://www.swiftpanel.com/ . You will not be able to use whm, that is a billing panel :D and cpanel's game panel is: http://cpgs.cpanel.net/
The best of luck to you

WHM isnt a billing panel lol...
ms-warren 11-26-2009, 02:56 AM meant whmcs :p
Securityhost 11-26-2009, 03:41 AM ISPConfig 2 works good on any server and is easy to install. Try it. On howtoforge.com you can find an tutorial to install.
JonBiloh 11-29-2009, 05:53 PM I'd suggest Windows with TCADMIN - easy platform for starting GSPs. TCADMIN is very flexible and powerful too.
kdmitchell 11-29-2009, 06:27 PM Someone asked if the premium was worth it for SCinterface. Seeing that I've been using it since it was in beta, I like it. But as far as how much it costs vs Tcadmin, no I'd say it's not worth it. Its still good but less is more in some cases.
CH-Shaun 11-29-2009, 10:12 PM I've always preferred CentOS over Debian and Ubuntu.
Dave Parish 11-29-2009, 10:25 PM TCAdmin is your best bet for fast and easy setup
Mohawk|Chris 01-03-2010, 07:20 PM Personally, Windows with TCADMIN - easy platform for starting GSPs. TCADMIN is very flexible and powerful too. I am like you, dont know very much and want it to be as easy as possible to oversee everything.
Blanks 01-04-2010, 09:25 AM If you are looking to start a GSP the you want to keep costs low. You don't want to be forking out for windows licences when Linux is free and easy to run game servers on. If you are a quick learner and don't mind a week of learning how to do things (if that) then I suggest going down the linux road and have the pleasure of full automation through cron and rc.local. As for distro, I have just moved everything off CentOS and onto Ubuntu which seems to have been a good move.
There arent many good control panels for linux that are well known, but you can always find a coder who will make one for a one off fee leaving you with less on the monthly running costs.
integrii 01-15-2010, 02:20 PM for the panel, probably linux.
for the games, you'll need both. Some games require a windows server while others are nice enough to support linux.
linux is more easily scriptable, too.

About the only popular game you can run on Linux are steam based games Counterstike, DayOfDefeat ,CSS left4dead,etc and they are old games. Most of your newer games do not even have linux files to run them. This is the way the game developers are going, it's cheaper for them and they only look at the cost and profit of a game now. Look at modernwarfare2? no dedicated server files period...
So starting out small using Linux because it's free your already limiting your sales growth. Trust me I would prefer to run all the games on linux but thats not going to happen.
