FYI before all the "server down" posts come in... :stickout:
RackMy.com 11-21-2002, 05:34 PM Sweet, I think I have won about $125.00 is side bets :)

:)
DD-SNC 11-22-2002, 12:02 AM Good. It needs it. I have servers in Columbus and I was going to get a server from fdcservers for gaming but the ping/routing was HORRIBLE. I get 22 hops and their all in Chicago between three providers =\
Maybe people should get off Yipes and get a real tier1 provider.
tazzy 11-22-2002, 12:46 AM Yipes is a mix of both BBN/Genuity and Level(3). We've had no *real* problems with Yipes (although we don't have a lot of bandwidth with them at the moment). However we're also planning to go direct with Level(3) to cut down some hops and add another Tier1 provider :D
But the price between 100mbps yipes and level(3) is quite big... obviously because how much Yipes buys...
Anyhow, thankfully we're not in Layerone, Chicago (which yipes doesn't even connection to ... which kind of gets rid of my point  )
How is FDCservers / Yipes going?
clockwork 11-22-2002, 11:41 AM Yipes uses FE/GIG-E drops, which makes equipment a lot cheaper. Yipes is actually substantially better than cogent, from my experience. It also boils down to how loaded the network is, FDC can get pretty loaded at times and the latency becomes like a rock in a blender.
goodness0001 11-22-2002, 12:33 PM Yipes bandwidth is just about as fast as I have ever experienced, and I have used them all from different datacenters.
clockwork 11-24-2002, 02:21 AM Bumping this as it's happening now :)

Yep :)
thesmallguyshost 11-24-2002, 04:48 AM but it's been more than 30 mins.

My thoughts exactly but then
Time: 12:01am to 4:00am local time
this is a 4 hours time window.
I suppose for FDC itself it is 30 minutes but other parts of the worl trying to reach them might fall into that greater time window perhaps.
a.harris 11-24-2002, 05:00 AM After 2 1/2 hours:
[06:16:35] -> [08:51:16] GMT
It looks like its coming up now, some of my services have come alive, although lots of TTL errors and time outs during pinging, these should sort themselves hopefully in a short space of time... oh well, 30mins my arse, but nothing ever goes to plan anyway... good job guys, lets hope it makes a difference
/me goes to track down his lost packets

The story of my life :D
clockwork 11-24-2002, 06:22 AM Hrm... might just be the time of day (little past 2am here), but after the maintainence my latency to FDC has dropped by 15-20ms.
Instead of 60-80ms, i'm getting a more consistent 55-60ms.
a.harris 11-24-2002, 06:24 AM Yeap, from the UK i used to get 200, now 140 (and no packet loss!).... dunno if its a side effect of not all the boxes being back up or whether this is the result of the upgrade (hopefully the latter ;->)

That's what I was alluding to :D
mushrew 11-24-2002, 07:42 AM I wonder if ping times will go back to crap again once they add Cogent into the mix.
skylab 11-24-2002, 08:26 AM is fdc going to add cogent back again? in/yipes out/cogent or something to that effect?
mushrew 11-24-2002, 08:29 AM Yeah they're going to but I don't know if it's going to be just for backup or what you said about yipes in cogent out. Hopefully it's just for backup so my remain at 70ms instead of the 140ms i'd get on Cogent =/.
netdude 11-24-2002, 08:29 AM they claim to be adding cogent for backup in 3-5 months in order to become 'redundant'... sounds kinda familiar, doesn't it? weren't they supposed to be redundant a hella long time ago...???
skylab 11-24-2002, 08:34 AM ahh, there has to be some other providers they could pull in that can come close to cogent's pricing. aleron, williams, i've even heard verio would drop low on a gigE.
illogix 11-24-2002, 04:34 PM I used to get 40-50ms to my server at FDC with 0 or 3% packet lost. Now I have 110-140ms ping with 23% packet loss :(
Neo3Net 11-24-2002, 06:00 PM How much do you think FDC is paying for 100mbit Lines from Yipes? It must be a hell of a lot compared to Cogent $3,000/Month

FDC runs on a Yipes GigE. Pricing is higher then Cogent naturally but not significally ;)
netdude 11-24-2002, 08:55 PM i've heard verio go as low as $60/Mbps on GigEs... :)
but note... all these other providers, just like cogent, require payment for the entire gige at rates such as these... heh

Learn to negotiate better and you dont have to buy even 50% of a gige for good prices these days.

It's already crap. They would get internap bandwidth and their network would still be that crappy. My server is not even useable, what can you do with 30% packet loss ?
And FDC says it's normal to lose some packets.

Hi I work with (not FOR) FDC. I am willing to offer you to have my SysAdmin look at the packet loss you are experiencing. We had such issues in the pas tand we solved them all. PM m eif you like as I need access data to the server.
Rob
I thought all these big providers either used redundant equipment so these downtimes won't happen, or that they have hot swappable core hardware to put in place when they have to take something down to upgrade it.
I guess this is this is one of the features you pay more for in quality providers.

Yeah....at least I'm not the only one that signed up for that deal (or say that special they advertised). They had Cogent and were supposed to add Yipes by September 31st and came up with some reason why they weren't adding it.
