Meta's are pretty much useless for the big engines. Well written text with a good ratio of your target keywords would be the best place to start. Also get some popular sites to link you. That should help with google especially.

Don't mean to be harsh, but I'd suggest going to: Searchengineforums.com and read until your eyes start bleeding. :)

I noticed something a long time ago when google started to become big. They generally use the title of your page/the text. So here's what you do, say its a web design site. You put like "YourDomain.com - Your source for web development, web designs, web coding, and much more!", list alot of keywords in it. I've seen it work.

But interactive's advice is a good place to start. The TITLE tag (which, by the way, some people argue is technically a "meta tag" even though it doesn't include the word "meta" -- a position I disagree with) is very important in ranking... but there are two considerations he didn't touch on: you have to choose the right keywords; find the balance between haivng terms people will search for and having terms that aren't overly competitive. And, remember that most search engine traffic won't come to your index page -- so pay attention to the title tag (and other on-page elements) on ALL of your pages.

A site a work for has that too, most traffic doesn't come in on teh index but on a part of the site. Therefor make sure all titles are good (and different) ..
