Seems like a pyramid scheme to me, I am confused by the whole thing. Just thought I'd get everyone's opinion on this.

That's just impossible

alohahosts 11-21-2002, 02:59 PM Interesting how they have a notice on the site indicating that they are *trying* to email people with no success.
punaboy 11-21-2002, 03:02 PM I'll check it out and hopefully find out the "catch" or fine print... hang tight.
sasha 11-21-2002, 03:47 PM Does straight line Matrix, mean I have to bring you 70 new Customers before I get my computer?
No, when you are on top, it means the next 70 period. In fact none of the 70 need to be connected to you at all. Ever. You are not required to tell anybody about our hosting. But if you do, it helps fill the Matrix, whether you are at the top, or someone else. All entries go in one line, it doesn't matter if they were sent by you or me.
I think I get it. Neat idea. When you sign up you are placed in the queue. Lets say you are number 100. Then you have to wait while 70 people signs up for each one of the 99 people that are in the queue before you. And then 70 more people while you are on the spot #1.
That is 700 signups. If you are on spot #100 when you originaly signed up.
I think they are bearly breaking even with this thing, but when the promotion is over some clients might stick around, and they have nothing to lose.
Err.. let me edit this a little bit.
Essentially It works like this. They give you a special little link, which you're supposed to give out to your friends. Through your special link you have to refer 70 people to sign up for this webhosting deal. When you refer 70 people your name gets added to the bottom of the list. Each time a name gets added to the bottom of the list, the person at the TOP Of the list gets a laptop. What they don't tell you is that there could be as many as 1000 (or more) above you on the list.
My friend was looking into getting a cheap laptop and really looked into this. I don't remember all of the details. But the place he looked at wasn't a hosting company, just some place that was charing $5 to set you up...such that you could then drive 70 people and get your name placed on the list. He found out they were only doing 1 to 2 signups a week and that it'd take him like... 10 - 11 years to actually get his laptop IF he got 70 people to go and pay $5.

Gordo 11-21-2002, 06:03 PM We can bring you this absolutely fabulous free laptop offer thru the wonders of the "World Wide Web" and the magical exponential properties of 70.
While you're at it, go back to the original site and look at our fantastic business opportunity. We are the exclusive marketing agents for ****, and for just $2,000 you can be our sole sales agent for one of the few remaining cities. That's right, you will have the sole right to sell prestigious 468x60 banner advertising for one of our proprietary city pages, specifically created for that purpose.
alohahosts 11-21-2002, 06:07 PM send me 700 clients and I will buy you a laptop!
:D
sewebhosting 11-21-2002, 06:15 PM Sounds like pyramid scheme where if you are one of the first few people to sign up, you win, otherwise it will take a very long time for you to get a laptop :(

A pyramid scheme works differently, though. In a pyramid scheme, there are multiple levels of payouts. In this scheme, there only seems to be one -- the top level. Few people will make it up there (very few). Those that don't make it won't get anything but maybe cheap hosting.
punaboy 11-21-2002, 09:29 PM Well, seems like everyone is already filled in. I went to their office, but lights were out, doors lock. Peaked through the window only to see a desk and potted plant. I tried calling, but no answer, oh well...
Alex[nl] 11-21-2002, 09:36 PM Wow .. not only a laptop, even unlimited bandwidth !! :)

Nearly unlimited new signups as well, if you're to get a laptop.
If anyone has already gotten one, then the next new signup will be no higher than #71, which will require nearly 5,000 more.
Then just imagine how long the guy that triggered your free computer will have to wait.
sewebhosting 11-22-2002, 01:25 PM Well if I signup now, I can get that VIAO in about 20 years when computers are no longer built on binary.
