I'm not sure if anyone on here has already posted about this or not, if so, forgive me.

Skype (the Voice over IP communication application) is to be released as an open source license in the near future. A source from Skype stated that they were happy to soon be a part of the open source community. This will make a lot of Linux folks happy because until now, there has been no mention of Skype being open source.

Skype has confirmed this is true by making a statement:
“We appreciate our user community’s enthusiasm and realize this is something they have been wanting for a while. We realize the potential of the open source community and believe that making Skype for Linux an open source application will help to speed up its development and enhance its compatibility with different versions of Linux. While it is our goal to make Skype for Linux source code available to the community in the nearest future, we are not at a point to disclose an exact release date yet.”

Although there is currently no release date, many of us are welcoming Skype to the community and hope we can expand on it’s features to make the application better. Opening the application up to the open source community, will most certainly result in specific versions for the different distributions of Linux.

I got excited right after reading post title, but it looks only Linux will have open source version of Skype. A little sad...

This really is great news. I have been waiting for Skype on Linux for quite some time now. As more apps because available for Linux, the more powerful via in-demand the OS will be come. This is a great addition.

I believe only the UI is being opened. While this is nice, it still relies on a binary 'blob' for the protocol which means it won't solve some problems such as lack of compatibility with certain architectures
