Don't know of a decent free one for W2K, however, we use Merak Mail which is very reasonably priced. A full edition w/ unlimited domains is $280 and you can get a 1 domain limited version for less.

There really aren't any free Windows-based e-mail server / webmail software packages out there but this may work for you...

Their is actually a free email server that I know of for Windows. It’s called EMWAC (http://www1.sica.com/IMS/). But it isn’t easy to install. I have set it up on Windows 2000 server though a few times.

XMail server: http://www.xmailserver.org (free/open source Mail server that works fine on W2k)
There are a number of web-interfaces linked from the Xmail website, WAI works fine for basic stuff.
These solutions will not be a simple, "click a few buttons to install" deal, but they work and they are free.
hey
xmailserver.org down???

I've actually spent the last week looking for a setup like this myself, here's what I found:
Free Windows Mail Servers:
Mercury Mail (http://www.pmail.com/overviews/ovw_mercwin.htm)
EzMTS (http://www.ezmts.org/)
XMail (http://www.xmailserver.org/)
And with any of those you can use SquirrelMail (http://www.squirrelmail.org), which is probably the best webmail system out there.
Hope this helps!

Forgot to mention, SquirrelMail should also work with MailEnable, though I haven't tried it personally.

The major disadvantage that I see about SquirrelMail, is that it requires IMAP, and I'd have thought that most 'hosting providers' would only use POP?
While it looks like a good WebMail product, I'm not sure I'd want to have to install/configure IMAP just for it. Or is it possible to run SM just using POP, I've only taken a quick glance at their doc's?

Most webmail apps do require IMAP servers, one of the few that can use pop3 is IlohaMail (http://ilohamail.org/).
It is a good software package, though I did have problems getting it send e-mail. Maybe someone else will have better luck :-/

The $280 version does not include the webmail component. To get that, you have to spend $460.
