View Full Version : How do I know if a webhost

Is reselling the servers from another company? For example, in my research I have decided that because of reliability and support issues, I do not want to go with certain companies. Let's just use atwebhost or unitedcolo as just a few examples.

How do I know someone else isn't reselling their servers? I do not want servers from certain companies. Yes, I could always ask them, but we all know not everyone is 100% honest about these things. I could do a whois, but they are most likely using private nameservers. Is there anyother way to check?

Feel free to pm me with the answer.

Thanks.

Do you mean if the web host is using a managed or colocated server for their hosting? One way you can tell is by going to http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph/ and typing in their domain name. It'll check their uptime as well as tell you who the owner of the IP address is.

put the question to the person you are thinking of buying from, they shouldnt lie to you - if there really reselling they should come clean.

ask for an IP to ping and run a tracert on it and see where the trace ends. :)

Bravid,

How to? Could you teach us?

Bravid,

That just tells you where the IP blocks come from, not if they are "resellers."

If you co-lo your server and buy your IPs from the same company (since they buy the main blocks) all that tells you is who bought the blocks.

Unless there is an issue with "reliability and support" at the NOC level, this doesn't really tell you the answer to the original question (are they reselling or not for a specific company).

Or am I missing something?

To ping and tracert using windows click on start and run then type CMD which will open up DOS.

You'll see this:
H:\>

Just type in Ping and the IP address and Tracert and the IP address and click enter. You can also type in www.whateverthename.com if you don't their IP

Example:
H:\>ping 000.00.000.00
or
H:\>ping www.whatever.com

H:\>tracert 000.00.000.00

That is exactly right. However, I took from his post that there were certain DC's he didn't want to even be hosted in through someone who has servers there.

Also, you can do a reverse lookup of the IP address and most likely if they are a reseller the reverse lookup will match the name of the company they are going through.

On the other hand, if you were to lookup my domain name you would find that it doesn't have an owner listed. I don't really know why, but until it showed up on mine I hadn't ever seen that before from netcraft and I've been using them for quite sometime to check into hosts, etc.
