Hello!

I'm a web designer who has been approached by several clients about my providing hosting for them. What is a fair, typical, monthly charge for this service? I was thinking of offering a combined hosting/maintenance package. These sites are static, so have no special requirements, and the clients are small.

I'm not sure how to approach this - any advice? I've never hosted anyone's site before, and don't think I want to be an official "hosting reseller". I just want to help clients house their sites.

THANKS!

Mabye get a deal with a hosting company, so you can get a % of there signup or something, let them handle it all... something like that?

Getting a reseller account is the easiest way to handle it. You can set it up with as much space/bandwidth as they'll need. It's really quite simple to do and you can get a lot of small sites (50 or more) on a basic package.
I put together packages for small businesses and offer a year of free hosting for brochure sites. I limit my hosting to design clients where I can control what goes on the site which cuts down/eliminates support problems.

Just realized that this question was a no no - shouldn't be talking about rates on the list.

If you don't feel like you want to be a reseller, then find a company that offers an affiliates program. This is a program where you get paid a referral fee for sending them customers. There are several out there, and they offer some decent rates.

If you do feel up to the task of being a reseller, then take it seriously. Never jump in half way. There are several companies that offer control panels that will allow you to keep your focus on design, and not on support. These control panels can make your customer almost invisible with all the functionality they put into them these days.
