Hi All,

I've just recently registered with a reseller company for a hosting account. Everything has gone well until now. I have even received my welcome mail with all the account details.

My problem is that I registered my domain with another company long time ago. In the email from my new reseller company it stated that i should use the ns1.mydomain.net and ns2.mydomain.net as the primary and secondary server names when i transfer my domain to them.

However now the insist that i use the IP numbers that they provided instead of the DNS names mentioned above.

When I go to the control panel of the company holding my domain name it only allows me to enter the DNS server names and not the number.

So my question is do i go back to my reseller my insist that they make available ns1.mydomain.net and ns2.mydomain.net or do I contact my domain name holding company and give them the IP address so that they can make the change for me.

If all that is too confusing then the simple question is do I need dns server names to tranfer my domain to the reseller or can I use an IP address.

Hope you can help.

you should be able to use ns1.domain and ns2.domain if your reseller account was anygood. Its bad to put IP addresses in.

sounds like you might be a little bit confused.

first you need to REGISTER nameservers with your domain registrar (not the same as modifying them)

you should be able to use the IP addresses given by your reseller to do this. once that happens (ie, the nameservers are live) THEN you can modify your own nameservers.

your reseller (as far as i can tell from your post) is doing the right thing...

teh reseller provider isnt doing the right thing:

"However now the insist that i use the IP numbers that they provided instead of the DNS names mentioned above"

They shouldnt insist a client uses IP addresses, they should point out to the client that ns1. and ns2.domain need to be registered and pointed to those IP's.

i think that's what his host means, that he needs to register the nameservers, pointing them to the specific IP addresses they provided.

i think the clue is here:

So my question is do i go back to my reseller my insist that they make available ns1.mydomain.net and ns2.mydomain.net

he hasn't created his nameservers yet, the only reason the host would be asking him to use the IP's is if they haven't been linked up yet (i would assume)

anyhow, hope he gets it resolved... :)

It's great if the ip's they gave you are unique. If the ip's they gave you are uniqe, then that's great.

Just go to your domain name register and ask to have the personal ip's registered with your dns. Eg. ns1.yourdomainname.com and ns2.yourdomainname.com
with the ip's they gave you.

Then you will have your own DNS. This way when customers point their websites to something, it will point to your doman name and it will look like you have your own company.

If the ip's they gave you belong to the company and are being used already then it's a problem. Then you have to go back and figure out what's up.
