I'm thinking about picking up a Raq 550. Im wondering if I can save a few bucks and buy a new Raq 550 1ghz, (1)40 gig HD and 256 mem for $1,250; and then add 1 gig of 133 SDram for $60, two 80 gig HD for $200 and have the $2000 Raq 550 version for only $1,500.
I mean that $500 could colocate me for the next year. Is it that easy? or am I missing something?
Also, will raq 550 auto backup and reboot if it needs to?
Thanks,

You can upgrade the memory. Just be aware that you'll need the right type of ECC SDRAM. It's in the manual somewhere.

I guarantee if you use that $60 1GB of RAM you'll have a miserable life. Find out which memory it uses and buy it from crucial.com, you'll thank me when you don't have any problems. Trust me on this one.
You can upgrade the drives but you'll have to have another 550 HD tray, Sun won't sell them and you can't buy them aftermarket. I've considered having some custom made, like we do with RaQ3/4 HD brackets and rackmount ears, but there's just not enough demand out there to justify the initial tooling expense. At least not yet.
You can reboot the RaQ from the CP. As far as the backups, I would only trust a script I wrote myself and installed on the machine. I don't know that anyone has confirmed the built in backup is any better than the POS that ships with the RaQ3/4.
Hope this helps.
