View Full Version : Fraud/Spam/Warez Customers List
Hi. As you may already know, we've recently been burned for about $1000. My Idea to you is a modified version of hostabuse
Would you guys join?
The idea is a host can do a manual search or integrate it easily into their/your order form with a simple API.
The system will allow you to search by domain name, email address (and MABEY name and phone # of person - i doubt it) and possibly a blanket search for characteristics or other things
If a person wants to dispute his/her listing, they will have the right to and each side will provide ample evidence and we'll choose. If we get sued and shutdown, so be it, atleast we'll help some host in the mean time.
The list should include spammers, people who use stolen cards, people who dont pay, people who upload warez or other similar offences. Hosts should also be able to look up "notes" on the domain placed by hosts that just leave a note about a customer/domain.
Would you sign up (a free service of course) and contribute to the list?
PS we already have a simple version working: hostabuse.elitehosts.com - we're doing some work on the server so if its slow/times out just hit refresh a few times :)
I've written a similar app that employs xml-rpc for real-time queries. I'll need beta-testers in a week or so. Would you be interested?
DayGlo 11-20-2002, 02:21 AM Iwould be interested in using it and help conribute to the list if (when) we get any bad customers.
Good idea :)
drhonk 11-20-2002, 02:43 AM I hope you won't forget about me poo .. :)
Reality Hosting 11-20-2002, 02:43 AM I'd be interested in testing and contributing.
Great! Just to let you know, I'm only looking for those with working sites.
Lippy 11-20-2002, 06:05 AM Just like to voice my great appreciation for this. Its a great idea and one I hope that comes to see great things. If I do decide to start either reselling or hosting I will be happy to contribute.

people who use stolen cards
While I've always thought this a good idea in theory, and I don't want to be the cold shower, people who use stolen cards often use stolen names too.
That's where the systems seems to come unstuck (it's been mentioned a few times - creating a database like this). I think you'd have to work out a way to make sure that innocent people wouldn't get caught up in this system because someone else decided that using their creditcard was the best way to pay for hosting (using someone elses money).

But they tend to use the same domain/email...
hostpc.com 11-20-2002, 09:04 AM I'd jump in on this one if allowed....
UH-Matt 11-20-2002, 09:06 AM We would be interested, but it depends how much info you need from us about a customer (data protection act etc..) Maybe just a domain name would be sufficient.
manderso 11-20-2002, 11:36 AM I would be interested in helping you out by testing this.
only domain name or email would be required to be put on the list as well as a reason for listing or notes on the account with what they did or just a note to the next host
Lippy 11-20-2002, 02:11 PM I think fot the stolen credit Card case it would be more looking at the notes, not so much the name. For example either the hoster's notes on any things different, and domain name, email accounts created and type of actions that occured on the site that aren't quite what you would call normal.
Krellen 11-20-2002, 02:24 PM I think this is a great idea. I would be willing to test and contribute, and once it's up and running, link from my site.
Cheers
OK - our system is virtually ready to go - we just have to make some minor changes - ill let you guys know
seg fault 11-21-2002, 12:42 AM Hello,
Myself and a few other hosts have been using a system for fraud order checking which is now a very large list using a hell of alot of resources :)
I dont like the idea of a bad client database, simply because if someone is going to defraud a host, they already are likely to have carded their domain and are using the cardholders details to get an account.
Then you have the anti-competitive aspect where large hosts submit all their clients so no other host can take them.
Another issue that that of who has access to the actual database.
If the database has a few thousand clients, what is stopping the person hosting it using it as a spam list - as i'm sure there would be some genuine clients in the list.
XML is an excellent idea - best way to do it in the background imo
Good luck with it all :)
