Your motherboard has to support USB 2.0

IF it ain't working get a refund! :) otherwise get an add-on USD2.0 card and see if it works on that card.

That's why I prefer BestBuy as a store, or NewEgg.com online.

I know little about USB apart from...I had this device....I plugged it into my USB hub....Nothing. Turns out the USB hub had to be self powered at 5 volts or something like that. The one I was using before was not powered. It is one of those things that you don't find out until it does not work. Maybe it is something like that.

On a laptop there are a couple of key combos you need to press and hold before it will allow you to boot to bios.

Check your manual for the needed info..also known as RTFM! :D

Did it come with the drive installed or did you install the drive in the holder?
I'm asking because it is really easy, at least with the ones I've got, to install it incorrectly as far as matching up pins and holes and put the first pair of pins in the second pair of holes. I've done it a couple of times. It will not be detected if you do this although the drive will light up and seem to be working.
The first time I did this, I spent about 2 hours trying to figure out what was wrong. Finally took it apart and figured it out.
The drive should slide in real easy. If you have to push it at all, it may be misaligned.

Kunal,

From what I found, XP out of the box does not support USB 2.0. So if it's enabled in you BIOS, you will need to upgrade to XP SP1, available from MS, or get the drivers from your motherboard manufacturer, if it's embedded USB chipset. I have had mixed results with SP1, so I ultimately used the drivers from my motherboard company. USB 2.0 now works fine for my ADS drive. Hope this helps.

Hey svdorr,
I have already applied the SP1 upgrade... my drives seem to be active in the system device and my mouse and printer and anything else i plug into the usb ports work fine.. so i guess they are all active?

as for the connections being messed up, well, i checked and double checked.. all looks good to go...

any more suggestions? :)

Kunal,

Well, this is a pretty good stumper. Can you give a few more details about your hardware.

- What model laptop?
- Are you plugging directly into a USB port on a laptop, or are you using a USB Hub?
- Is you USB integrated to the motherboard, or do you have PCMCIA card for USB?
- When you plug in the USB device, do you get any notification from XP. Such as a sound, or any icons in the systray?
- Have you been able to get into your laptop BIOS?
- Do you see it in Disk Management when you plug it in?

Just to verify, you are using this drive kit...?

I think its directly integrated...

- When you plug in the USB device, do you get any notification from XP. Such as a sound, or any icons in the systray?

- Have you been able to get into your laptop BIOS?

nopes...

- Do you see it in Disk Management when you plug it in?

No Problem. When you have a chance, look on the bottom of your laptop.

There should be sticker with barcodes that has a model and serial number. If you can find these, post them here.

Oh, and don't forget to get some sleep.

Kunal,

It may not help, but through my full time job, I have access to dedicated support resouces such as premier support databases. I am checking through them, and it will help to know your exact laptop. ADS support is by far the worse I have ever dealt with, so I am working up the compaq side for the moment. I will see what I can find out. What type of drive do you have in the inclosure. Is everthing hooked up properly? Not trying to insult your intelligence, just don't want to overlook the obvious. Have you ever run this drive as IDE, in another workstation?

kunal
11-22-2002, 10:39 AM
The drive i am trying to hook up is my old creative cdr.. its wokring fine on the desktop... and all the connections are correct.. i have checked and re-chcked.. i also went into the bios and enabled usb bootup :)

thanks for the help!

Kunal,

I am unable to find a reason for this not to work for you. Have you tried connecting the USB drive to another workstation, to see if it recognizes it? Also, have you tried throwing an old hard drive in the drive kit, to see if your laptop recognizes it? This would help rule out your Creative CDR's inablility to be run over USB. Otherwise, if none of the above options work, it may be the USB drive kit. CompUSA should exchange it if it has not been more than 14 day. Let me know if you are able to try any of the above suggestions.
