View Full Version : network problem with dedicatednow?
Josh C. 11-19-2002, 08:52 PM I cant reach my box for about 25 minutes now. I also try to ping mehost.com. It is unreachable too. I have experience about 3 brief outage yesterday too. They were about 10 minutes each. Anyone expriencing similar problem??
ideafusion 11-19-2002, 09:52 PM I'm currently having trouble accessing as well
phpcoder 11-19-2002, 09:54 PM Why don't you guys posts your traceroutes :)
Marty 11-19-2002, 09:54 PM they are having a router problem, I believe. Jay and the crew are on it.
freakysid 11-19-2002, 09:55 PM Yes - I have one server with pwebtech/dcjn and one with mehost and the connection was flakey yesterday and is again now. up and down. No doubt a temporary problem. (fingers crossed) :D I have some accounts on a voxtreme server as well, and they are affected too.
Marty 11-19-2002, 10:07 PM I only had one minor glitch yesterday, and then again about 7:50 pm EST tonight. It came back up in 10 minutes, but went back down at 8:45pm and is still down.
StevenG 11-19-2002, 10:09 PM They are having a router problem, I just spoke to someone at the DC and they were reloading it apparently...
akashik 11-19-2002, 10:10 PM trouble here too. Twice now I've tried to get things dealt with on the new server and it's not available. Thankfully there's no customers on it. Thing's up and down like a yo-yo.

simplenet 11-19-2002, 10:20 PM Yea well mine has customers on it!
Any ETA on when things are going to be back up?
trafficg 11-19-2002, 10:29 PM Yep my pwebtech server is down too, my connection was a bit unstable about the same time yesterday too.
Generally the connection to my server has been very good, my downtime over the last 10 months has been almost zero, I guess this outage is going to increase my server downtime by 0.001%
Lets hope Jay and the gang fix it soon.
Pete
Marty 11-19-2002, 10:30 PM Agreed. I have not had any real problems till now, I am not panicing in any way. I have faith in these guys. They will get us back up soon.
Tom Pyles 11-19-2002, 10:30 PM Yup...router problem. Unfortunately, I just moved some clients over as well....Crossing our fingers too that it is resolved quickly.
akashik 11-19-2002, 10:34 PM well thankfully it's only effecting servers on 64.*.*.* and 66.*.*.* for us. 216.*.*.* is still fine.
Haven't experienced much of an issue with 'the 60's' in the past, but certainly more than over at 216.
Greg Moore
Marty 11-19-2002, 10:37 PM Not all of the 64 block is down. 64.247.*.* is up. It appears to mostly be 64.39 and 64.21
(SH)Saeed 11-19-2002, 10:39 PM We've been with pWebTech for months now and their network uptime and speed has been nothing but excellent. This is the first "major" downtime I've experienced and I hope they fix it soon...

Did you already forget about the several hour recovery time for the power outage a few weeks ago :) This has been a bad month for me, the past year was great!

Hmm.. I'm not sure if that didn't affect us or if we didn't notice it.
prime 11-19-2002, 10:44 PM Any word on when things will be back up?
It's going on 3 hours now... While I'm one of the lucky ones that wasn't yet using it to host sites, I spent all day working on it and had expected to keep working tonight :(.
wsdhnet 11-19-2002, 10:47 PM My first full day with all my customers on it. I have been telling them for weeks about how we weren't going to be having these network problems anymore and the first day the sh*t hits the fan.
I've got my fingers crossed they can get this resolved ASAP.

Are you sure you have been down for 3 hours? There was a 15 min hit earlier but this time it has been about 1 hour for my 2 servers.

mspottedhors 11-19-2002, 10:52 PM Please pardon my ignorance of things like this. How long does it take for a router to be replaced? Is there an alternate they could do to get us up faster. I just moved clients over today, and I also made the promise to our clients that we wouldn't have an issue like this. Anyone been through this before to advise what usually happens?
simplenet 11-19-2002, 10:56 PM I just told my clients... this is a new Datacenter
mucho better than others. Not more the 3 minutes later it goes down.
At least we could get an update.
(SH)Saeed 11-19-2002, 10:58 PM It's been down for about 1h 15m for us. We have a lot of customers there as well...

Generally speaking.....You find the nearest corner, bow down, and pray like you have never prayed that all your customers went to bed early. :)

Same here.
I don't have a server with them, but if I did, I would be pissed off, no matter what it was, or how long it was. Downtime is downtime, and downtime costs money.
mspottedhors 11-19-2002, 11:00 PM I already see somebody posting questions about it in a forum I'm active at. It is unfortunate. We just convinced her that moving to this server would be a good thing for her (and it was). 1 hour after moving her site and her resting easy, it goes down.
simplenet 11-19-2002, 11:01 PM Pissed off? Why is the DN site working but my server is dead?
Im not pissed but that upsets me.

No I'm not sure... it's just that Josh C. (first message) posted @ 7:52 that the network had been down for about 25 mins (so more or less since 7:27) and it's now 10:00 here.
But I had to leave around that time too, so I wasn't in front of the computer when it happened.
Because lucky me, my car also broke down today (brakes...) and I had to see what I could do. In the end, nothing...
But anyways. It's very possible that it's only 1 hour so far.
Where are your servers ? Mine is in the 66.246 range.

Marty, that one is not working for me, what next :) OK, I know a smart answer is on it's way!!!
ideafusion 11-19-2002, 11:03 PM I thought I had correctly planned for this situation I have each domain of my clients set with (names made up) ns1.dedicatednow.com and ns2.dedicatednow.com and I added ns1.burst.net and ns2.burst.net to the 3rd and forth thinking if dedicatednow failed that burst would take over.
For some reason this isn't working if anyone has any ideas or can help me I would appreciate it if you pm me, as my clients are about to lynch me after this week a blown mother board earlier in the week with burst and now this two days in a row..
Mr. Berto 11-19-2002, 11:03 PM Ever done a trace to DN's site and then to your server? Everytime I do, they always take a different route...

When packets can't get to the server, it really doesn't matter how your nameservers are configured.
Marty 11-19-2002, 11:05 PM Curt,
I am out of ideas.

I was wondering about that too...
It's probably hosted on the pwebtech servers. Or it's been said that servers in the 216 range were still up, and theirs is there.
mspottedhors 11-19-2002, 11:06 PM Well....Hmmm I should still have a back-up of this clients site on our old server. Is it time to restore her back-up is are things like this resolved in a reasonable amount of time?

Maybe the sites weren't cached yet in the nameserver your browser uses, or you use your own name server. In both cases, change would have been very quick.
In the first case, the names are now cached, so reverse should be longer. In the second case, the names won't be cached in your name servers, but will be in others around the world. So everything will be fine for a few at first, gradually affecting everyone over the next 2 days or so :(

You mean 66.246?
Could it be that 66.246.xxx.xxx is the only subnet left that's down? Maybe they "think" it's all back to normal.

That's good, but right now, downtime like this, is costing clients a lot of money, and time. You've seen what's happening to a few people.. just moved, said it'd be okay, then it crashes... That doesn't sit well with some people.. it shows deceit.. atleast to me.

5% cash back for every 1 hour of downtime. Atleast thats the way I interpreted it.
SLA Network Violation Credit occurs when our network uptime guarantee is not met. DedicatedNOW will refund the customer 5% of the monthly fee for each hour of downtime (up to 100% of your monthly fee) for network downtime. Network downtime is measured from the time the network is 100% unreachable, until service is once again restored. In order to request a performance credit, you must fill out our SLA violation form, within 10 days of reported violation, at: http://www.dedicatednow.com/customer_help/sla_form.php . SLA violations will be reviewed by our personnel Monday – Friday 9AM to 5PM EST. *Network violation SLA credit does not cover server hardware failure.*
· Performance Credit exclusions: The following are excluded from the monthly calculation of Service Availability:
· Scheduled downtime
· Problems outside of DedicatedNOW’s network (upstream providers, or client’s inbound connection) not effecting 100% loss to our network
· Interruptions or failure of individual service caused by client, their employees, client’s customers, etc. to their service. These include inaccurate configuration, 3rd party software, client abuse or over utilization of resources, hacked servers, attacks, exploits, or server hardware failures.

Toobad that link in their SLA doesn't work... 5% for every hour = 15% ...
66.* servers are backup now :)

Who will join me?
mspottedhors 11-19-2002, 11:57 PM Man. What a freakin wild ride. I'm scared to head off to bed. This incident was only a small fraction of the type of day that I've had today, including the hit and run on my way in to work.

Get me one, I'm in!
I will... if you care to bootleg me some.
Marty 11-19-2002, 11:59 PM I think I will just go pray some more!
Josh C. 11-19-2002, 11:59 PM My has just came backup. Damn, down like 3 and half hours. What happen to their 99.9% uptime guarantee. Any official words on the problem..
trafficg 11-20-2002, 12:00 AM Even when I was with United.Colo (when they had their 49 dollar servers) I had better uptime than this...
I've had around 5 hours (maybe a bit less) of downtime over the last 10 months, I don't think it gets much better than that.
That's around 0.06% - 0.07% downtime.
Pete
::collapses on floor::
okay - would like to hear from someone.

Agreed. I haven't been with Pwebtech/MeHost/DedicatedNow as long as you, but outside of this and the power outage (which didn't keep me down as long) I can't be happier with the uptime, speed, and support that I have gotten so far.
DNCOO 11-20-2002, 12:04 AM There was an issue with the DCJN Router failure out of the NAC DataCenter.
DCJN traffic has been routed through the Net Access Core router and all connectivity should be restored.
We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.
Highest Regards,
jayglate 11-20-2002, 12:04 AM nm did already.
prime 11-20-2002, 12:04 AM It's not the downtime that bothers me. It's the lack of emails or post here.
Of course, they both had to post while I was writting this...
What kind of assurance can we have that this will not happen again?
jayglate 11-20-2002, 12:09 AM The fact that you are now directly plugged into NAC's parsippany core, should be assurance enough.

Marty 11-20-2002, 12:10 AM Ed and Jay,
Thanks for the update and disclosure of information. I thank you for being dilegent in working on the problem and then communicating the outcome.
HostingDirect 11-20-2002, 12:12 AM Yes, thanks for the update! I am assuming there will be plans at some point to replace the DCJN Router and put it back in the mix???
jayglate 11-20-2002, 12:16 AM We are thinking of getting some nice fun Juniper M5's to go with NAC's M10's :)

I am SOOO glad that Jay is sooo involved in the boards here letting us know what is going on. :-)
wsdhnet 11-20-2002, 12:20 AM Thanks DN, we are just happy to be back alive.
John
Will you be crediting clients based on your SLA for this downtime?
mspottedhors 11-20-2002, 12:22 AM A big thank you to you guys over there for the update...Is it safe to go to bed yet :)

So this was a pwebtech owned router that went down? Just curious.
zerphyte 11-20-2002, 12:22 AM Thats funny we have two 100mbit feeds to their dcjn router and a bgp session none of which has had any problems ever let alone tonight.
DNCOO 11-20-2002, 12:23 AM The 99.9% uptime guarantee breaks down to approximately 7.2 hours of allowed/anticipated failure per given month before that guarantee is broken. (The math is not exact, so don't flame me with 100th's of a percentage if I'm off LOL)
DCJN is a solid network and network interruptions do happen, I do sympathise with the board in saying that the timing could not have been, well..... better! (sarcastic)
We do sympathise with you guys and believe me, it's not just an inconvenience to you, but to us and our staff as well. We try to handle the important issues and get them resolved then come here and try to answer all your questions and get you up to speed as quick as possible.
I hope I have made it possible for some of you to get a good night's sleep ;)
All is well again, no worries......
Highest Regards,
jayglate 11-20-2002, 12:24 AM Ok, you are in NYC and we are in Pasippany, and it wasn't their router it was our router. Please understand the facts.

DanielP 11-20-2002, 12:26 AM Jay... there's no reason to attack him, however, from your first post you did make it seem like it was a nac router that went down, although thats been cleared up now.
Thats right! Thanks for the feedback. For some reason I thought your uptime guarantee was 99.99%. My mistake!

Doesnt look like he's attacked anyone to me.

jayglate 11-20-2002, 12:34 AM Also to my knowledge pegasus is the only company with DCJN access in parsippany atm.

Incorrect; anything longer than 43 minutes of downtime will already break their 99.9% uptime guarantee. Check your math ;)
DNCOO 11-20-2002, 12:39 AM Now... Now My WebHost Enthusiasts..
The post was about a router issue.. the issue was resolved.
let's not take posts and make new threads out of peoples posts..
I'm gonna say that everyone play nice this evening..
I say we all jump off this thing, finish our beers and try to relax.
Let's give peace a chance :)

Well, as I said previously, mostly fixing problems and a little letting us know would have been nice. I'm not saying they should have monitored this thread, just that they should have posted something.
And that's not directed only @ DN. It seems that more and more companies often forget to inform their customers.
Anyways. Everything if fine now, I'm happy, you're happy, they're happy, everyone's happy and I'm going to bed. :)
Too late Ed, I already finished my beer ;)

Sorry, this maybe a little bit touchy.. But correct me if I am wrong.
99% uptime = 7.2 hours of downtime
99.5% uptime = 3.6 hours
99.9% uptime = 0.72 hours = 43.2minutes
99.99% uptime = 0.072 hours = 4.32 minutes
99.999% uptime = 0.0072 hours = 0.432 minutes

Why not do both?
(1). Make quick post/email [whatever] to let folks know of the issue. [30 seconds max]
(2). Then get busy fixing the problem.
(3). Keep folks updated throughout at 15 minute intervals. [30 seconds max for each update]
A little communication goes a LOOOOOOOONG way. :)
DNCOO 11-20-2002, 12:45 AM Yes... I stand corrected!
I did the calculation off the top of my head and rounded with 99% and not 99.9%
Hey, I'm in hosting.. I didn't say I can compute tenths and hundreths of percentages in my head and on the fly.. ;)
The SLA stands to ensure you guys get the service you deserve and we will adhere and honor that SLA agreement.

That's great in theory but it never happens like that in practice, you start off thinking it will be a quick 2 minute job, and then one thing leads to another and before you know it one and a half hours has flashed by.

Bob, you know I agree with you, but in the heat of an emergency, the first thing you go on is instinct, delegate, and resolve the issue. After our nerves have calmed over the situation.... we get that little voice in our heads that goes.... WHT!!!!!!!!!
We login to see a 5 or 6 page thread already started... LOL
I'll make sure to keep a reminder around to get at least someone to log in and post some messages.. "Wonder if the fiance would give me a swift kick in the rear if I asked her to do that for us while we are working???" ;)
Highest Regards,
freakysid 11-20-2002, 01:00 AM I will be contacting pwebtech tomorow to work out why platypus.globalnamehost.com is on DCJN when I signed up for full NAC bandwidth as per the mehost speical offer from a couple of months back. Perhaps I have misunderstood something here - but this seemed to be a DCJN problem.

hehe. Not talking about posting into WHT. Just use your own emergency notification system. What works well is a standard VBulletin forum and you post a quick message into an emergency forum and you make sure your clients are subscribed to that forum and they get email notification of the new thread made by yourself with the issue at hand etc. It works very well. :)

I just looked over your account in our billing system and it does show your server on the DCJN network, not the full Nac Network.
If you would like to change this over feel free to drop me an email tomorrow.
Cheers!

Yes, this would be effective and as soon as we can agree on a proper new web page setting and update all our sites.. we can implement this and give our clients their own forums to vent and keep updated in. It's in the works.. I promise you that!
We'll have this in the upcoming future..

(SH)Saeed 11-20-2002, 03:07 AM I noticed it too, but always wait a few minutes before you get worried :D

I agree that there should be an emergency mail list, so that we can all be notified in situations like this. I am sure I am not the only one who didn't find this thread until after the emergency was over!!! :crap:
dwscenter 11-20-2002, 03:23 PM Hello All,
This is from DedicatedNow's website:
24 X 7 support 99.9% network uptime guaranteed
Do we get refunded being it went above this hehe :D

You'll find any pertinant refund info on page 9 or 10 of this category, lol.
dwscenter 11-20-2002, 04:18 PM To be honest I didnt read the thread in its entirely, I just skimmed it knew it was down found out why and was making a humurous joke :D
