View Full Version : Overused Images
ZiCmaN 11-19-2002, 02:33 PM I know that it is the net and that there is an awful lot copy cats out there, but how many times have you seen an image, button or something that makes you say, "Damn! Enough Already!"?
Anyhow, do you think everyone or at least these folks are just getting the images from the same image bank or what?
I mean for the most part if you see a button or something you can say well they either created it, recreated it, or whatever. BUT when you get to an image that just seems to be the same male or female on 1,000 different sites there's no mistaking >>> you're not original at ALL!
Just a thought as I surf;)
lol, my host uses that image: http://hostmatix.com :p
I agree. A rather large number of sites are using the same images and that goofy perspective shot is getting annoying.
I realize that not everyone doesn't have access to a graphic artist as I do, but heck with all the stock photography sites with thousands or hundreds of thousands of photos available for purchase, there really is no reason only a few photos are overused, especially by hosting companies.
If you are one of the guilty ones, might I recommend:
gettyworks.com
istockphoto.com
eyewire.com
Getty in particular is pretty affordable unless you want high res, which you don't really need for web apps (only for print materials).
AndyP 11-19-2002, 03:08 PM I agree entirely! I see the same shots over an over again: weird perspective portraits, blue-tinted network cabled, racks of servers you *know* they don't really own. We're really trying to stay off the stock photography, even if that means actually making our equipment look photogenic!
ZiCmaN 11-19-2002, 03:15 PM :D :stickout: :D
She kinda looks a little retarded in that particular image:cartman:
lol
AndyP,
Get a good camera and photoshop! Create your own bizarre effects on your own photos. Photoshop rules.
tmwes 11-19-2002, 04:03 PM Husband (http://www.your-site.com/index/guy.jpg) ,child (http://www.your-site.com/pp/ysite-about.jpg) , and mother-in-law (http://www.your-site.com/pp/support-terms.jpg) of that chick.
ntwaddel 11-19-2002, 04:13 PM I have taken all my network pics myself, and threw the blue tint on them ;)
they may not be the best photography, but at least they are mine, alllllllll mine muahhaha :D
phpcoder 11-19-2002, 04:36 PM Alot of people get the images from gettyimages.com as well :)
icicbiz 11-19-2002, 05:06 PM lol - i was thinking about this a couple of days ago.
there is another one i have seen in many places, same perspective but three people in suits looking up. :)
Here is the one that drives me nuts her sister... (http://www.xsenses.com/goofy_chick.jpg)
progex 11-19-2002, 06:00 PM Keyboards, keyboards, and more keyboards
http://support.hostmatters.com/images/computerkeys.jpg
yeah , i would have to agree , these images are total propaganda . People only use them to make themselves appear larger then they actually are . Its not a bad thing , its just a played out method of advertisement , that really isnt fooling anyone these days
MilkMan 11-19-2002, 06:34 PM So sick of seeing those...
I was thinking of using a pic of someone flipping the bird.
Geek3 11-19-2002, 06:35 PM hey, that's my daughter! Who got that picture!?? ;)
Synthetic 11-19-2002, 06:43 PM Yes, alot of people are constantly using the same images from free stock photo sites.
The image I often (and hate) seeing is the one with a girl in front of an orange iMac.
spindeep 11-19-2002, 06:53 PM I must admit, I am guilty of using that image with the girl in front of an orange imac... This is a very funny thread..... thanks for bringing it up.. :) LOL
This is a good thread and so true!
TripleByte 11-19-2002, 08:01 PM Alot of hosts use the same layout and images now-a-days and not only does it hurt their business, but it also hurts other businesses who started using the image first. Like the image in the first post, I wonder who was the first person to use it? Doubt we will ever know. It's a shame too. I feel that the layout of a web hosting company says alot about who they are. That doesn't mean that the design needs to be packed with flash and high bandwidth images, just needs to be unique and make a statement. Kudos to all the hosts out there who make their own templates and are unique :)
tapster 11-19-2002, 08:06 PM this is her after waiting for the tech support to reply to an IM

That's funny. :laugh::laugh::emlaugh::emlaugh:
Reptilian Feline 11-20-2002, 06:46 AM I think a lot of people prescribe to the same few sites, like this one: arttoday.com and I'm sure some graphics designers have had their work bought by a couple of these sites as well so they can be found on several of them. If you want original work, do it yourself, get a digicam and start snapping :)
UH-Matt 11-20-2002, 08:49 AM I would take my own pictures for our site but im licenced to a multi million dollar porn organisation, they are the only people who can use pictures of me :D :D

nickLWN 11-20-2002, 01:47 PM In fact we considered one of those images and decided not to do it. I think rackspace was the first to come out with the random person generator. Too bad that the cute girl on the site is really a 300lb unix admin with cheeze wiz on his tie!
I just saw the ipowerweb girl on another site and I was thinking the same thing.
The image banks need some new images. I think people use them because they are free and they don't want to break copy write rules, but it's too much.

You mean a Star Wars tie with Princess Leia in the slave outfit printed on it.
